Immigration in Phayao in the north of Thailand caught a convicted American pedophile red handed.

"Mr Eric" - aged 66 - had set up a language school at his house in Muang district of Phayao and was teaching children English without a work permit.

Earlier the chief of Thailand's immigration bureau Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang had received representations from the department of homeland security in the States regarding Mr Eric, reported Siam Rath.

The Americans told the Thais that the suspect had left the country after being convicted of sex crimes against children and had headed for Thailand.

He was sentenced to four years jail in the States but this was suspended. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $11,500 and compensation in the sum of $4,248 before he fled to Thailand.

Region 5 immigration and the department of labor went to see Mr Eric at house 5/1 on Soi Ormsin on Prasat Road, Muang district of Phayao.

He had set up his house to teach English and was doing so with children when the authorities arrived.

He was initially charged with working without a work permit and detained ahead of being blacklisted and deported.

The suspects full name was not given in the Siam Rath story.
