Hi,

i am arriving in ko samui on the 12th and heard lots goes on during the 12-17th for Songkran.

Any advice on where to go?

Is there a beach party during those dates?

Last year in Lamai there was only one day of water sloshing, thank god.

It was quite literally like a wave, it came and was gone.

Good fun had by all, however.

Personally I stay indoors for 2 days , but you will enjoy it.

2 days of drunken water fights.

13th. is the biggest and wettest day, 12 and 14 very little. Chaweng Beach Road will be soaking wet. (Actually not too bad, cleans the street of all the grease) If you drive a bike, drive CAREFUL. If you drive a car, lock the doors. But most of all - Have Fun !!!

tends to start here on the 11th around the green mango area,i think the 13th is the main day when it is flat out madness, but good fun!we usually have a good feed about midday, then its off to chaweng, get tooled up(water pistols)get on the piss, get soaked,go home for hot shower, then chill out.the next day nothing really happens, just nursing a hangover.

Take my advice, don't drive a motorbike during Songkran, it takes one bucket in the wrong hands to send you to the Hospital , word!

Been there, done that... stupid I was.

just my experience over last 8 Songkrans as it will no doubt be contradicted used to start night of the 12th all day 13th and 13th night. last 2 years especially last year in soi Reggae the police stopped it happening on the night of the 12th but full on on the 13th. former prime minister tried to calm things down due to masive death toll on roads example from press copied below, loads of differnt figures though. usually about 40000 injured as well.

as most residents have noticed and and commented on there seems to be a lack of police authority here at the moment so i would expect it start during the night of the 12th and go all day and night on the 13th. thankfully Samui does not carry on after that. from my experience soi reggae or soi green mango on the night of the 12th any where in Chaweng all day on the 13th. alot of locals drive around the island in cars and trucks with barrels of water on the back. where ever you are on the 13th you will get wet and have fun, take the advice of other posts not a time for the motor bike, at least 90% of drivers on the road on the 13th will be smashed out of there face.

"Over the coming Songkran festival, the Road Safety Commission hopes to keep the fatalities under 930. It is worth noting that some researchers expect this year’s toll to be higher than last year’s, given the increased number of vehicles on the roads.[/b]"[/b]

On samui alone, I take it?

Actual statistics from The Nation for last years Songkhran. And look, Surat Thani wasn't even in the top 5. Imagine that.

Road toll for 2006 Thai New Year reaches 476

With 476 deaths and 5,985 injuries, the road toll from this year's New Year festival was lower than thatof last year.

The road toll during the 10-day Songkran holiday was 476 deaths and 5,985 injuries, with Phitsanulok seeing the highest number of deaths at 20, caretaker Interior Minister ACM Kongsak Wantana said yesterday.

On Sunday alone, the last day of the April 7-16 holiday, 386 accidents killed 35 people and hurt 452, Kongsak said, with drunk driving being the number one cause, followed by speeding.

Most accidents involved motorcycles, occurred on straight stretches of highway and took place between 4pm and 8pm, he said.

The overall death toll of 476 was down 46 from last year's Songkran. Total injuries, at 5,985, were down 153, Kongsak said. There were 5,327 accidents, down 325, he said.

The five provinces with the highest death tolls were Phitsanulok (20), Chiang Mai (17), Nakhon Ratchasima (16), Lop Buri (15) and Rayong (14), Kongsak said.

Nakhon Ratchasima, which was at the top of the list on several days during the holiday and has seen the highest death toll in previous years, reported 16 deaths. The figure was disputed by some because it did not include two men killed in a road accident in Pak Chong district at 11.45pm on April 13, an observer said. Only Phrae, Ranong and Samut Songkhram were casualty-free.

Of the 18 provinces that surpassed their pre-Songkran death toll estimates, the 10 worst were Phitsanulok, Uthai Thani, Lop Buri, Sa Kaew, Tak, Rayong, Phang Nga, Phattalung, Uttaradit and Chumphon, in that order.

Chiang Rai reported the most accidents throughout the period with 223, followed by Phitsanulok and Chiang Mai, each with 191. Chiang Rai also had the highest number of injuries with 228, followed by Phitsanulok, Chiang Mai and Si Sa Ket, Kongsak said.

The nationwide police checkpoints stopped 825,952 vehicles and charged 34,300 motorists, mostly for failing to present a driving licence, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, and reckless driving, in that order, Kongsak said.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasatidya yesterday thanked police officers, public officials and motorists for their help in reducing the long holiday's casualty toll. Although the toll remained under the pre-holiday projection, the number of casualties was still quite high, he said. Yesterday, 13 people were injured when a taxi rear-ended their pickup truck, causing it to hit a roadside pylon at 3.45am on Bangkok's outbound Vibhavadi Road.

On Lamai last year, my first Songkran, I turned my bike onto the beach road and the very first person I came upon (a Thai guy) had a "Shark bucket" full of ice water which he jettisoned as hard as he could right into my balls.

I thought, "Mother of Christ!" about two octaves higher than I usually think....
