NEW YORK (Reuters) - Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg sailed into New York Harbor on Wednesday in a zero-carbon emissions vessel, completing her nearly 14-day journey from England to take part in a United Nations climate summit.

 

The 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl, who set sail from Plymouth, England, on Aug. 14, was greeted by cheers, chants and singing as her silver sailboat, the Malitzia II, cruised past the Statue of Liberty through choppy waves and rain to drop anchor in Manhattan's yacht harbour.

 

"All of this is very overwhelming and the ground is still shaking for me," a seemingly bashful Thunberg, clad in a dark blue jumpsuit, told a gathering of reporters and activists who greeted her and the crew of the Malitzia II on land.

 

"It's insane that a 16-year-old had to cross the Atlantic Ocean to make a stand on the climate crisis. This of course is not something I want everyone to do," she said.

 

Thunberg made her trans-Atlantic journey carbon emission-free by travelling on 60-foot (18.30-meter) yacht, which is equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines that produce electricity onboard, along with a large black sail carrying the message: "Unite behind the science."

The boat has no shower or toilets, and those aboard including Thunberg's father and crew members ate cold canned food throughout the trip.

 

Thunberg, who first drew international attention last year when she started missing school on Fridays to protest against political inaction on climate change, said she planned to take part in a demonstration outside the United Nations in New York on Friday.

 

But first, she said, she planned to: "Eat fresh food, not freeze dried, not be wet and to clean myself."

 

Peppered with questions from reporters about her message for U.S. President Donald Trump, a climate change skeptic, Thunberg suggested she was not interested in butting heads with the Republican.

 

"My message for him is just listen to the science, but he obviously doesn't do that. No one has been able to convince him of climate change, the urgency, why should I be able to do that?" she said. "So I'm just going to focus on spreading awareness."

 

In addition to the U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York, Thunberg intends to attend the COP 25 climate change conference in Santiago, Chile, in December, planning to make her way there without using air travel.

At first glance i thought she did a solo crossing on her yacht. But nope another hugely funded yacht and so for me the magic ended after reading about her crew.

i could care less. Now had she sailed solo like so many before her i would be interested in her voice.

Her message is hugely relevant, so relevant she had a crew prepared to help her get that message across by making the trip too.

imo , greta the climate holy maria did more damage to the climate than good 1. she flies back on a plane. 2. a special boat crew was flown into new york. she is not very popular in sweden that spoiled billionaire back child.

I think there is no person on the Earth which is able to live 100% ecologically clean. It is simply not possible. And if Greta had to use, for example, some plastic bottles or not, it doesn't matter because her message is clear. It is not hypocritical. It is better to spread the message than do nothing.

Another poster who believes that electric power depends on fossil fuels. What you're actually propounding are fossilized arguments. Way outdated.  Already coal power is mostly uneconomical. And gas is already being outcompeted more and more by renewables. Way ahead of what was predicted just a few years ago.

Well thanks for bringing up a subject that actually supports the case for human caused global warming. Right now the Sun is in the middle of its deepest solar minimum in 100 years. There is a weak link between solar minimums and global temperature. It's a negative one. The deeper the minimum, the cooler the temperature. Despite which global temperatures are establishing new records. July 2019 was the warmest month ever recorded. June 2019 was the warmest June ever recorded. The last 5 years are the 5 warmest years ever recorded. And all this took place despite the dampening effect of the solar minimum.

The sun is not in the middle of a grand solar minimum (which WOULD impact the earths climate). Back in June 2019, NASA claimed that there are signs that the sun has REACHED the grand solar minimum phase. Signs.

Just wanted to point that out since you based your entire argument on confusing facts.

 

You state that there's a weak link between the solar minimum and climate change, yet you use it to defend your claims of climate change...?

Sure she is being exploited and for what. I highly doubt this girl is the brain child behind this voyage.

But many young girls have sailed around the world alone on small yachts. For many reasons . Now If she had done something similar it would be a great moment but as far as this moment its just pathetic.

I agree. It's getting a bit daft when grown ups and an entire media machine call her "a prophet" and "the new messiah". I think she's remarkable, but as you point out, she's exploited by an entire industry with their eyes on trillions.
