BBC's The War of the Worlds adaptation finally lands first trailer

It's been over three years since the sci-fi adaptation was announced, and only now we have finally been given the first trailer for BBC One's The War of the Worlds.

 

Starring Black Mirror's Rafe Spall, Poldark actress Eleanor Tomlinson and Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle, this three-part series based on HG Wells' iconic novel has endured a much prolonged road to the small screen, but the results look spectacular.

 

"Ladies and gentlemen, it seems that something has arrived in England," a voice announces in the first-look trailer above, before the Edwardian denizens of the story look to the skies believing it to be a shooting star.

 

Of course, fans of the classic story will know that it isn't a shooting star.

"The War of the Worlds" is an episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air directed and narrated by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles as an adaptation of H. G. Wells's novel The War of the Worlds (1898). It was performed and broadcast live as a Halloween episode at 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 1938, over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The episode became famous for allegedly causing panic among its listening audience, though the scale of that panic is disputed, as the program had relatively few listeners.

I like that it"s based in the original Edwardian era, rather than the current time of the recent films and series.

 

I wish someone would also make a James Bond film based in the 1960's.  Some stories just work  better when set in the original period.

Hopefully an adaption which doesn't take too many liberties from the original text...but the BBc are bound to screw it up with some PC element somewhere.....

The original period for the first seven stories (and one collection) from the twelve Bond novels (and two collections of short stories) that were written by Ian Fleming, were the 1950's.

 

Starting with "Casino Royale" in early 1952, "For your Eyes Only" being written in 1958/9.

I thought that H.G. Wells wrote War of the worlds in the Victorian era?

You're right.  Written in 1897, Victoria died in 1901.

 

But close to Edwardian. ????

Either that or one of the heroes will be .
