Bhumjaithai ministers threaten to quit if controversial herbicides are not banned

Increasing pressure was applied to the National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC) when Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced today that the Bhumjaithai party’s ministers, who oversee the use of paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos, will resign if the committee does not decide to completely ban the three toxic chemicals.

Speaking at a hotel in the southern province of Phatthalung, accompanied by six other Bhumjaithai party MPs, Mr. Anutin reaffirmed the party’s demand, in the public interest, for a complete ban on the herbicides.

As far as the Ministry of Public Health is concerned, he said that two representatives of the ministry, who sit on the NHSC, will definitely vote to ban the substances as he called on the committee to vote openly, instead of secretly as it had done in the past.

Do they have replacements ready to be put into use should they discontinue the use of these chemicals.

If so will there be an education program to prevent the misuse of the replacements?

Of course he won't quit, he's the minister for marijuana where the potential profits are HUGE!

No Anutin.

As it would be PM Prayut's decision not to ban these herbicides, you should instead threaten the PM for a no-confidence vote in the House that would require a new government election.

What Anutin is saying by analogy is that if a chess opponent doesn't play fair, Anut will resign.

Instead Anutin should threaten to knock the opponent's king chess piece* over.

* symbolism for Prayut

53 countries have banned them, including Laos, Vietnam and China, and 17 others limit their use.  Of course there are alternatives.

You should not believe everything you read.

Ok.  The info was from the BP (why I didn't name it).  However, those same figures are mirrored in multiple sites around the world.  Do you therefore consider them all to be wrong (another conspiracy!).  Get real.

He can't afford to quit and antagonize the junta. The junta had him by his bullocks with the multi billion infrastructure projects that his company Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction benefited with more to come. He is part and parcel of the unholy alliance that stole elected governments for their personal gains.

I truly hope these poisonous substances are banned.  However, I do not hope for the officials who oppose them to resign.  We need them to keep their posts and continue fighting these toxins if they are not banned yet.  Keep up the campaign to eliminate these chemicals from Thai society for everyone's benefit!  Don't give up until the goal is reached!

And while you're at it, ban Monsanto and its new parent company (the one that bought Monsanto) Bayer from doing business in Thailand.  We don't need GMO rice or anything else either.  Without the GMO plants, the Roundup (glyphosate) has less of a purpose here.

Instead of resigning, why not instruct his party MP's and himself to join the opposition when serious/essential voting comes up for discussion/debate e.g-the up coming budget bill. That would put Prayuth and his mob under all sorts of pressure and just might convince Prayuth they are serious in their actions.

Then again, why bite the hand that feeds.

True but colluding with government that stage a coup, change the constitution and rigged the election to stay in power takes the BJT to a different level of corruption and totally lacking in decency and morality.
