They still go, don't know exact times but the train does go all the way to Hualampong. About 35 Baht for a four and half hour trip

Going from PTY to BKK you're stuck for the night, the train leaves PTY in the early afternoon, so you arrive early evening and the return trip to PTY leaves early in the morning...

i did it once a few years back. the bit from pattaya to chachongsaeo was easy enough but from thereon it slowed down with major construction work going on, the rain came down and all east bound trains were running late meaning several delays
