Chaos around Chalong last night

Featured Replies

Anybody else get caught up in that last night?

I needed to go to Phuket town about 7pm turned left out Sai Yuan onto the main road

The traffic was backed up all the way

Did the tunnel get flooded?

I looked like many cars broken down after driving in the flood water

You really don't know that half of Chalong was under water last night?

this is why you dont buy mini cars in Thailand

I do have a small car, a Suzuki Swift, and it is a great little car, and has seen me through one or two floods here, but what pisses me off more than anything is when I am slowly, very slowly, wending my way through fairly deep water, some absolute f/wit in a big four-wheel-drive or similar, comes tearing down the other side of the road, pushing a bow wave in front of him and putting me and my car in some sort of jeopardy.

I had a similar thing happen when I was on my motorbike a few years back as I was navigating, very slowly, through some deep water in south of Nanai, and then the same thing happened with another f/wit pushing a bow wave in front of him, which completely flooded my motorbike and actually came up to my waist, knocking me off it.

In keeping with the road manners in general here, these idiots have no respect for other road users, or the conditions in which they are driving.

Actually the best way to get through flooded sections, if your vehicle doesn't have a snorkel...

Sometime people will cover their front grill with plastic, then crank on through. The water gets pushed out the way and doesn't flood the engine bay.

Driving slowly through flood water is a recipe for a flooded engine...

You were just collateral damage ????

You make a fair point if the water is very deep, however if it is only a couple of feet deep, then the chances of a flooded engine compartment are just about non-existent, and anyway these days there isn't a lot low down in the engine compartment that will cause an engine to stall.

In the cases I mentioned, I still refer to them as f/wits, because there was no need to go through the water at that speed.......a total disregard for others as is the norm here on the roads.

was gonna say this

driving slowly in almost every road situation is dangerous, including a flood.

I think now it's an offence in the UK to drive through flood water and drown everyone in site and bye the way I do have 4x4 I respect other road users

Yes, all people on bikes, people walking, shops and houses getting flooded by people who don't think about others.

its pouring down, theres 3feet of water and splashing someone(to avoid breaking your own car) thats completely soaked is inconsiderate?

Really? Name them. I have never heard any test where they say speed is good, Maybe a F1 test.

Crossing flooded areas/creeks/rivers it's much better to have a bow wave and something like a plastic tarpaulin covering the front of the car(when you don't have a snorkel attached to the air cleaner) to help stop water ingress into the engine and the bow wave also helps suck the car forward, if your pushing water over the bonnet your going to fast. High revs in 1st or sometimes 2nd's normally good enough.

Exactly correct. Another life time ago I trained to be a bus driver. We were taught to engage a lower gear, maintain a steady speed, keep foot on gas to maintaining engine revs, until clear water. Never take foot off gas and let water flow into exhaust and flood engine.

But that's not to say high speed through water, just steady speed.

Which is not high speed.

And very unsuitable method for areas where people are walking and motorbiking, and where there are shops and houses next to the road.

No one talked about highspeed. The word used is always SLOW.

SLOW is ALWAYS a problem in ANY  road situation.

SLOW implies slow, it doesnt imply that everyone else is going like maniacs at 200km/h
