Popular Post Pilotman
I have never seen the logic of counting down to a totally artificial New Year timing. As the whole calendar is a man invented phenomena and the world time is different in different time zones, what is the point of all the fuss made at 12 midnight anywhere? Okay if you just want a party, but why wrap it up in a patent falsehood? I place it firmly with the Black Friday made up day, the idiotic Valentines Day, the equally ludicrous run up to Christmas and many other made up occasions, to get ripped off by retailers. We need to have some serious adjustments made in the new world order, when it comes. Back to my morning coffee, kicking the cat and shouting at the wife. 13 2 3

brokenbone
i never felt the need to count down as an excuse to get drunk. if i ever bothered with counting, i must have been too drunk to remember it, and it certainly wasnt the reason i went out. while i reflect on this, i think every single time i went out drinking back home was a complete waste of time and money, i should have saved it all for the gogo's in pattaya

OneeyedJohn
Have to agree, always thought Y2K was wrong. I was in Heathrow for a flight to Toronto on January 1st that year, and Concorde was cancelled because everyone was sh it scared of flying that day. .. Popular Post ballpoint
While the day chosen as the starting point of the year is an arbitrary one, there is still something worthwhile in celebrating Earth having successfully completed another 940,000,000km trip around the sun (at 107,000km/hr). And long may it continue. 2

That would leave summer solstice to celebrate, drink and party. Let's blame the Romans. (555)
PhilAtUbon
I think it's a perfect opportunity to reflect on the previous 12 months, and to resolve to make the next year better. My New Year's resolution is to completely stop drinking anything alcoholic. Mind you, I was p155ed when I made it ????

tabarin
Always found it weird too, specially since living here and being so near to Australia, being done already and then China, happy new year again on the 25th...... Guess it is just to entertain the working force, they get their free days and a reason to drink and behave insane while free people can do so any day. richard_smith237
I’ve been reading a number of posts this ‘season’ which seem to be somewhat depressing in origin... In another thread there were discussions about how as Thailand is not a Christian nation Christmas ought not to be celebrated here, that some of the posters were trying to escape that commercialism, didn’t like Christmas etc. Yet, from friends (nationals) all over the world Christmas was celebrated if not with religious context, then just for fun and an enjoyable time with families (i.e. in Japan where Japanese friends celebrated Christmas for fun). Now we have a thread about New Year and the pointlessness of celebrating a ‘man made construct’ - New Year. Yes, its pointless, however, anything which brings family and friends together is a good idea.... Just roll with it and enjoy it, this is one of ’those issues’ undeserving of anything other than a relaxed attitude towards....

SkyFax
I don't know why but, at least in 1954 (based upon the movie marquee) a bunch of people in New York City's Times Square thought it was worth the effort.
