I have a friend who went to Phuket immigration to file his TM 30 last week. He had a copy of his rental contract but was told they needed the original contract.

Can this be right? If so, this law is even more ridiculous than I have understood before. And believe me I didn’t think much of it before.

But if you have to give them the original rental contract and not getting it back every time you stay away from home over night somewhere, your landlord will surly get fed up with it all. Let’s say you need to do your TM 30 12 times a year. A bit of traveling around Asia and some around Thailand. And you might have some friends visiting from time to time. Than 12 times a year is quite reasonable.

But handing over a new original contract to immigration 12 times a year is well beyond reasonable.

So, can it be right that you must give them a new original every time you hand in the report?

Your friend can register on the IO TM30 website as tenant of the condo he rents, which will allow him to file his TM30s (or of any foreigner staying at his condo) on-line.

He only needs a scan of the rental contract and a scan of his passport ID-details (if possible, but not required, he can also add a scan of the house-book of his condo).

> I have PM-ed you a comprehensive step-by-step instruction on how to register and file TM30s on-line using the IO TM30 website.

I think they wanted to see the original and then would of kept the copy.

OP, I don't get your complaint. I always take my original lease along with photocopy. This is normal practice. Exactly as taking along your bankbook even though you have photocopy.

Copies generally always needed along with "sighted" originals for most things. Everywhere

I was not there so I don’t know the exact words that was used. But he told me he had copies but had to come back with the original contract (+ Power Of Attorney letter) and the officer kept it, not the copy. To me it sounded crazy and I can’t really believe this can be right.

This is the first time I've heard about an immigration office which isn't satisfied with a signed copy of a rental contract for a simple TM30 report. It's the same rental contract you can upload when registering online and that's accepted. Go figure.

"Everywhere"?

I have self reported the TM30 as possessor more than once at Jomtien Immigration when changing condo. I have never brought the original contract, and they have never asked for it. I just signed the copies myself together with the rest of the copies from the passport incl the TM6-card + the form.
