what if scenario:

that say some UK dude, decides to fly a holiday from the UK... and is bringing his chinese born wife; who's never bothered to change to a UK passport, and might never have gone back to china for the past, say,  20 years?

is the blanket ban 'that' draconian?

what if an expat in LOS has a chinese born wife, that is a dual passport holder... and in her adopted  Passport that she's using, has Wuhan as Place of Birth?

Really, all this girly panicking is becoming tiresome. The virus, so far, killed as many people as Thai drivers in 4 days. The mortality rate is low and stable. Rise of new infections is stable and, actually, the curve may be starting to flatten a bit.

Just look at the stats and calm down:

The Thai government has been banging on for months, if not years now, that it is pinning the recovery of it's ailing tourism industry on the Chinese. Therefore banning visitors from China now would effectively make them look a bit stupid and cause a huge loss of face - i.e. it won't happen.

As such, Thai people will potentially be exposed to the virus. Saving face has a lot to answer for. If people in Thailand could just admit that they were wrong now and again, move on and make an informed decision about what to do next, the country would be much better off.

China is as huge as the whole of Europe and population twice that of Europe, to ban everyone from China is not only immature but racist.

That's just like saying that if a virus is found to infect a group of people in England, the whole of Europe should be banned. Is this logical? Would Europeans not feel offended?

Anyway, China is having a lockdown of the city that is the epicenter to prevent it from spreading.

I agree completely! If you look really closely you can see the curve is going a bit down. For sure there will not be 3-4000 more cases tomorrow. Nothing to worry about. Thailand could end up being the medical hub it always dreamed about.

Make sure you have insurance guys... ????

Yeah and it certainly is not spreading that much ????

Thailand will not hesitate to ban all Chinese to protect its own people, like any national government. It's just the numbers don't warrant that in the slightest at the moment. There have been no deaths in Thailand, 19 cases, 7 of whom have recovered and the remaining 12 may still do so.

With SARS there were 2 deaths after a year in Thailand. Unless the death toll in Thailand rises dramatically it should be unlikely Chinese will be banned.

Just like Americans are not banned because of 60,000 deaths from flu each year.

Or unless the number of infected becomes so high that they start to lack ressources to handle them. I think that was what happened in Wuhan. Suddenly the hospitals become over-crowded. And when that happens it gets out of control... just like Wuhan.

Ssssshhhhhh!

No Test-results = No infected = No Problem = More shopping = Happiness!

Every single region in China has infected people. Nearly half of the people from Wuhan left the city before it was shut down. Therefore limiting entry for all Chinese is simply logical because it doesnt matter which region they're exiting from the chance of an infected passenger is going to be higher than say a region with no reported cases. In your example you used the UK as the only place that had infections as an excuse to ban the whole of Europe. This is more akin to all the countries in the EU having infected people, which is what is happening in China. Not all regions in China are in lockdown. So there are places with reported cases that are still exporting passengers around the world.

Compared to how many Thai's dying of plain vanilla flu in that same timeframe?

Because every year, the flu mutates and last year's immunity probably isn't effective against this year's strain.    Based on the CDC stats for the USA, an average of 100 people die of flu every day in the USA.  With 1/5 the population, I'd guess that 20 Thais die of plain vanilla flu each day.  Year in and year out.

But you don't see them decimating an entire industry, putting millions of Thais out of work for the flu.

Have you ever seen a situation like Wuhan before when it comes to normal flu?

Ever seen China lock down huge cities like this before at great social and financial costs?

Think there might be something worrying going on?

1) Is the situation in Wuhan so bad because of the virus, or because of the panic?  Besides, a typical Chinese emergency ward looks like the zombie apocalypse on a normal Friday night.  You're judging it through western eyes, with nothing to compare it to.

2)  Yes.  I lived in China through SARS.  We were doing factory tours and often drove up to a town that was barricaded to outsiders.  That was before YouTube, and you never heard about it.  Very few outside of China heard about it.  And the CCP got their peepees whacked by the rest of the world (and their own citizenry) for lack of transparency.  Which goes a long way to explain the panic and the news out of Wuhan.  SARS' total deaths?  Under 1000.  About what China loses in 2 days to flu in a normal year.  Coronavirus, BTW.  Closely related to the Wuhan virus.

3) Sure, I'm concerned.  But I'm also concerned about the millions of Thai's who will lose their livelihoods if Chinese tourism was banned.

Trump, immature and racist, gleefully bans all aliens who have been to China within 14 days.

Since there are currently so many unknowns about this new virus, I can not understand that Thailand does not (like others) close down their import/export of Chinese for e.g. 2-4 weeks. The plan should be to contain this. Tourism is already hurting them and this would be best in the long run.

The situation in Wuhan and other cities, I doubt is a hoax. This is costing China A LOT of money to do and I also doubt we have seen the real figures from there. They must have a real good reason for the lock-downs of millions of people. And since China is known for not sharing too much information, this is worrying. Besides I doubt very much other countries would react like they do, if this was not serious.

From what seems known right now, is that this new virus is taking up a lot of hospital beds in China and it is spreading fast. If this spread continues at this rate, it will not take long before millions of extra long-term hospital beds are needed. The entire health care system in China could simply break down, if it not already has done so in many cities.

What I see, is the potential for any city to become like Wuhan. Can e.g. BKK manage to find 500 - 1000 new hospital beds daily for a long period of time? Would they be able to lock-down BKK the same way as it has been done it Wuhan? And how would this end up for tourism in Thailand?

Remember. In Wuhan there was also only 19 people infected at one point. Health officials have already announced the possibility of outbreaks here.

From my point of view, I worry Thailand could be much worse off, if they do not focus on getting this virus contained as fast as possible.
