I don't know if it's a generational thing, but I think all people of my age (75), including expats, would be proud to stand for their anthem/flag regardless of who holds power. Too many fifth columnists in the US who seem to hate the country that's given them everything. The UK and Europe are similar.

As for the history of standing and the national anthem being played, looks like it started in 1918 at a world series game.  WW 1 veterans being honored and so forth.  A fine idea.  But I don't see the need and I object to peer pressure.  While rare, peer pressure and threats can lead to things.  Not trying to compare this to Nazi Germany or any other country that has enforced behavior and customs, but I do.

 

  A few years ago I was at Balboa Park sitting down and watching a cultural festival at the chinese pavilion house international cottage.  They opened with the national anthem and as an experiment and because I was tired I did not stand.  I noticed a few other people looking around that were near me, and two families with kids also did not stand.  No doubt there were many foreigners and tourists there and no doubt some of them had little idea why people were standing or what the song was.

My late mum used to regale me with tales of playing the British National Anthem at the end of a movie in the cinema and there was a gadarene rush to get out of the movie before the credits ended so they wouldn't have to stand. Free people in confident nations with self-respect don't feel the need to wrap themselves needlessly in the flag and nationalism to be proud of their country.

I don't see any intolerance on their part. I see from you a transparent and untoward attempt to racialize this issue. We don't even know as yet if this was some kind of protest either. As I said before, if it was a protest, I think being the public figures that they are, they should have at least explicitly explained that. For all we know they just were so absorbed with each other that they spaced out. Or something else.

Many native Americans probably have a very different view of nationhood than white citizens of European descent as do African Americans something a lot of entitled white citizens might do well to remember. The fact that you imply they should move somewhere else tells me what your concept of freedom is. And who are the triggered snowflakes now ? Somebody didn't stand for the anthem and you are sobbing all the way to your MAGA rallies. Grow a pair and move on ....

Not everyone NOT standing up, NOT saluting, NOT doing-whatever is a NON-patriot. You also do not have to appear in church while still being a believer in the faith.

Nationalism has very few benefits but comes with huge drawbacks if we look at the 20th century. 

I personally don't like the flag of my country as it doesn't represent me nor do I particularly like the national anthem. But it's a free country so I can still stay there. I never chose it. I was just born there. Much as these nationalistic U.S. citizens posting here about the respect you owe to a piece of fabric were just accidentally born in that particular country.
