Popular Post webfact
Coronavirus crisis: Phuket expects 10 billion baht hit - but it could be twice as bad Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported that the tourism association of Phuket were preparing for the worst as fallout from the coronavirus hits the island and neighboring Phangnga hard where it hurts most. In the pocketbook. Arrivals at Phuket International Airport were in fact up for this year's Chinese New Year compared to last year. From January 22nd to 28th there were 237,688 arrivals. From February 2nd to 8th 2019 (the lunar new year was later last year) there were 232,474 arrivals. So it was a 2% increase. But since two companies offering direct flights from the epicenter of the virus in Wuhan stopped coming this is now on a considerable downward trend. Various predictions are being made about the impact of the virus on revenue. A 50% hit on Chinese arrivals - an average expectancy - will mean 10 billion baht losses over expectations in the coming months until April. However, if 90% of Chinese visitors fail to materialize this will mean a 20 billion baht hit. Thai Rath said that the figures were based on an average Chinese visitor spending 7,500 baht a day. Popular Post Gweiloman
Great times ahead, future’s looking good. Huge drop in Chinese arrivals, farang tourists not coming due to high baht, expats leaving due to immigration crackdown. Thailand slowly reverting to the paradise it once was. 3 4

Well, here in Phangnga we don't have many Chinese visitors, the ones that over-crowd Phangnga bay and Similan islands are coming from Phuket. Anyway, nice and quiet there, we won't miss them !

Love the mathematics of that - 50% = 10 billion, 90% = 20 billion

DrDave
A 10 billion baht hit to the Phuket tourism business catering to the Chinese probably means about 9 billion baht less flowing back into Chinese-owned business both here and in China.
