Thai soldier kills 'many' in shooting rampage

Featured Replies

It's a shocking state of affairs.  I can understand hatred for corrupt politician's, for wealthy people who gained wealth corruptly but I see no logic to what this maniac has done.   What kind of twisted mind can lead someone to do this???

Latest from a Thai source.

Still in the mall. Holding hostages.

They want his mother to persuade him to give up.

Bloody hell, this is just terrible news. Hopefully, he won't be able to carry on his murderous spree for much longer.

Well if he's got all that ammunition and theres people still in there, special forces should have been in and dealt with it ! Or maybe need to set up a committee first

My Mrs just told me she read on Thai media that this guy was screwed over on a land deeds title by his boss and they didn't pay him his bit ... sound familiar?

taking out innocent shoppers will teach them !

Being shown on Deutsche Welle as I type. Hopefully they can resolve it one way or another soon without further innocent deaths.

Looks like he took care of the problem first, as it is reported he went to a house and killed two people there. then returned to his base and got more ammo and a new gun.

Being a soldier though, that's going to require some diversionary work from Prayuth and Prawit. wait and watch

Even if that wasn't intended humour, it's still highly amusing.

False. You are completely delusional. Thailand’s gun laws are extraordinarily strict. Only Thai mafia carry weapons. If your statement is at all accurate, you must be living amongst extreme lowlifes in a very poor and low status part of Thailand. Thai males carrying guns lolololol.

weapons are everywhere in Thailand, legal and illegal - mostly the latter

Wife says 40 dead, not sure if that is correct. We were there a few week ago. ????

Far be it from me to burst your delusional bubble mate but I feel pretty sure you will be shot down in flames with that one.

Yes but i never heard similar stories from Europe of policemen or soldiers starting to shoot around...

Sounds like he had a grievance, and now he's doing the "running amuk" ritual suicide thing not unheard of in other parts of SEAsia.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often when someone sees a lifetime of work, or generations of family wealth, stolen by corruption.

If this happened in another part of Thailand, we'd be reading about an "insurgent".  Leading me to wonder for a long time, how much of the southern insurgency is really a reaction to government corruption, by someone who's given up on all legal means to get justice?

See, I did warn you, best you slink off to the rock you hide under until this is all over, nite nite.

anyone can apply for a gun going through the application process, problem is the cost of the gun is double the price in comparison to the illegal ones, so many choose this option

..... and we're off- I reckon at least 20 pages of ill informed comment, conjecture. 'expert armchair' opinions and all around moon howling by tomorrow. Cue the next 'this will be the death of Tourism in Thailand' thread.

Interesting that there hasn't been a news blackout on this for 'reflecting badly on the country'. Ch7 has been reporting this- there would have been a complete shut down on something like this a few years back. The power of social media strikes again.

Lets sit back, take a deep breath and see how things develop before donning the tinfoil hats chaps. More people die on the roads each day in Thailand than in this (hopefully) isolated incident. He's bound to have been slighted in some way and gone postal as a result.

Man you are one bitter and twisted pessimist.

YOU happen to be the first one to mention any of that nonsense. ALL the other posts have been pretty much on the mark with the events unfolding.

Mostly lawyers, judges, government workers and police ..... but you're right there's probably a few lowlifes in that bunch. But as far as I know if a Thai wants a legal gun, he just needs to fill out an application form at his local police station. My gf tells me if you want an illegal gun, you just ask a policeman if he'll sell you one.

Once i asked my friend (senior policeman) where i could buy an air rifle to kill snakes...he started calling around but i never got one.
