..... and we're off- I reckon at least 20 pages of ill informed comment, conjecture. 'expert armchair' opinions and all around moon howling by tomorrow. Cue the next 'this will be the death of Tourism in Thailand' thread.

Not many tourists in Korat, just a few old retired expats living the rural life with their misses.

It's a Budha day so many parents taking the kids to the mall. Thats what the missus says anyhow.

I'm guessing that because he's got body armour, helmet and a military rifle, the police can't get close enough to shoot him. He probably gets more shooting practise than the police he's up against as well.

I believe he IS delusional when he said... and i quote... 'Just about EVERY Thai male i know carries a gun'.

Really?..... So will you back him up by saying that just about every Thai male that YOU know carries a gun?

I have lived here for 10 years and I know a hell of a lot of thai males and i have NEVER heard of a single one in possession of a gun.

I can't say the same for the UK as I come from a rural area and many many people have guns.

Sincerely hope that the relatives are okay mate, keeping fingers crossed for you, good that your wife and nipper got out before he struck. Good luck mate

He will never be allowed to give himself up,the truth of what drove him

to do this will never come out,it will be a cover up, crazed soldier on drugs.

RIP   all those who have died.

lengthy fully automatic gun fire heard in the video:

potentially when this is sorted out there will be a very high death toll.

Elite police, army forces lay siege to Korat mall where gunman is holed up

Elite police and army forces from the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok and Lop Buri-based Special Forces have arrived at Terminal 21 shopping mall in downtown Nakhon Ratchasima province, where a gunman is believed to be holed up with many shoppers trapped inside.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often when someone sees a lifetime of work, or generations of family wealth, stolen by corruption.

If this happened in another part of Thailand, we'd be reading about an "insurgent".  Leading me to wonder for a long time, how much of the southern insurgency is really a reaction to government corruption, by someone who's given up on all legal means to get justice?

In Asia in general, money issues explain a lot of things.

In fact, in the world, when people are prosperous, and invested in their societies, they tend not to act against them; when there is unfairness (in the form of lying and corruption), or lack of equal opportunity, it is fertile ground for a lot of destructive things. Historically, revolutions tend to happen when people's economic expectations are suddenly not met, and this phenomena might explain Trump and Brexit. Sometimes people lose it over a woman, usually some kind of humiliation (the case that prompted the HK riots springs to mind), but more common is people being shafted on a deal, and westerners seem take a more "beta male" approach, whereas in the developing world, there are many drivers for a more "alpha male" approach.

All these things are about power, using paper power to subdue and betray people, relies on them not taking away that paper power with some kind of metal-based power, if you know what I mean.

Once i asked my friend (senior policeman) where i could buy an air rifle to kill snakes...he started calling around but i never got one.

There's the problem, should have just asked for a rifle, job done.

There were many more clips on one of the twitters thread you posted, NCC.

Yeah, I would say it's going to resolve itself shortly after the ammo runs out, unless he finds access to more, or to something else, or even manages to escape. If he is a reasonably experienced, reasonably fit, reasonably competent, soldier, then not every police officer is going to be confident taking him on.

Video of gunman just after he arrived and shot parking lot attendant. Some other videos at live leak too under the recent section.

You clearly know nowt about Korat... I live there and I know many expats of all ages, and this is a city, NOT a village.

Please don\t comment on things you know nothing about, i bet you haven't even been here.

Pretty reliable Twitter poster from past govt.

I don't live there and several have shown me there's (at different times), including my ex brother-in-law that copped a mouthful from my ex as to why the hell he had Glock in his glove compartment.

None of them being "low life mafia" types as alluded to in another post. Ownership is fairly common according to them (Bangkok based) ????‍♂️

It hasn't been a good weekend for Thailand, has it, what with the health minister saying foreigners should get out of the country and now this. But then, when is there ever any good news from Thailand.

Hard to see this getting any better unless he shoots himself!

Some Thai news say he was middle man aka agent in land sale and didn't get his cut apparently from his superior.

Hostage situation ongoing.

There's a gun shop not far from the mall, but he probably didn't plan this out.

Terrible guy.

so he's angry about cheating rich people and he shoots students and parking assistants.

no punishment is severe enough for that guy.

Exactly where is he holed up in the mall?
