The wife and I were doing some general shopping today at the Makro store near Chong Nonsi in BKK, and while in the pharmacy there, the wife spotted a lone display bottle on the counter of Aro brand alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel 480 ml size for 85 baht. But we didn't see any on the shelves anywhere.

Turns out, they do have it in stock, but they're not keeping it either in the general store or even in the pharmacy, but rather, at a little mini office at the front of the store near the far end of cash registers row. The reason, as it was explained to us, is that they're limiting sales to 1 bottle per person (though seemingly they certainly could do that just as well in the pharmacy).

But at any rate, the point is, Aro is the Makro house brand and they seem to have available stock now of a pretty good sized hand sanitizer bottle at a very reasonable price.  And if the Chong Nonsi store has it, probably others of the Makros do as well.

Over the last couple weeks, every single pharmacy or shop we've checked with has been sold out of hand sanitizer, so it was quite a surprise to find that Makro actually had it in stock and available for sale today...and not at an extortionate price!

They have a load of 70% alcohol 'cleanser' in Gourmet Market, it's not so cheap at about 180 Baht a bottle.

And before you say, well, they're the WHO, let me say, they're also the same WHO that has consistently recommended against countries imposing travel restrictions in order to slow/prevent the spread of the CV, and look where that's gotten a lot of places.

Well, they are the WHO:-) And you are wrong about travel restrictions stopping spread. Listen to the UCLA epidemiologist:

Where would the world be right now if China had not quarantined its outbreak areas and stopped outbound tour travel?

By near universal acclaim, health officials outside China say the Chinese action -- while it's not going to totally stop the virus from spreading -- certainly helped slow/reduce its spread and gave authorities elsewhere added time to ramp up and prepare for local outbreaks.

The alternative, had China not taken those kinds of actions, would be truly frightening.

I'm happy to debate this topic in other threads. But this thread is supposed to be about practical info and tips for people relating to the CV. So it would be better to keep it to that purpose, and save the debates for elsewhere.

pretty good sized hand sanitizer bottle

hand sanitisers are a  bit of a diversion - they are NOT as effective as washing your hands and need to have over 60% alcohol.

However most people apply incorrectly which makes them a waste of time.

All the major health agencies recommend using hand sanitizers, if available, or regular soap and water, provided the latter is done vigorously for at least 20-30 seconds.

I believe the products shown above in this thread all meet the 60% alcohol amount you mention.

"All the major health agencies recommend using hand sanitizers, if available,"  no they don't, they recommend using hand sanitizers if you can't wash your hands - they are a second best.

As said people think that smearing a bit on their hands is sufficient and then wipe the stuff off. They are not as effective as a good soap or hand wash.
