Government establishes COVID-19 management center

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - A coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) management center has been set up at Government House in Bangkok. Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has instructed all relevant agencies to integrate their work to deal with the spread of COVID-19.

 

He has assured the public that Thai workers, who are returning to Thailand from Daegu and North Gyeongsang in South Korea, will be placed in14-day quarantine at state facilities. They are not allowed to return home, to prevent the potential spread of the virus.

 

After a meeting on measures to handle Thai workers returning from at-risk countries, the Prime Minister said he would serve as the chairman of the COVID-19 management center at Government House. He will oversee policies and instruct all related agencies to be prepared for any circumstances. He said the government has adequate measures to deal with the situation, with Thailand ranking 17th out of 75 countries where COVID-19 has spread.

 

Speaking of the illegal Thai migrant workers in South Korea who want to return to Thailand, Gen. Prayut said they must be screened in the country of origin. After arriving in Thailand, they will go through three levels of screening, and those who have a fever will be separated from the group.

 

North Gyeongsang province and Daegu city in South Korea have been severely affected by COVID-19. Thai workers traveling from these two locations will be placed in 14-day quarantine at state facilities immediately. Workers who return from at-risk countries will be taken straight to hospitals, if they have a fever. If they have no fever, they will be quarantined in their respective provinces.

 

The Ministry of the Interior has worked with provincial governors to locate a quarantine facility. Those in quarantine will not be permitted to return home.

 

Many Thai workers in South Korea are gradually returning to Thailand. They are being screened by the South Korean authorities before departure. If they have a fever, they will not be allowed to leave the country. He urged the public not to worry too much about the issue, as the government will look after all Thai people.

 

To address the shortage of face masks, the Prime Minister said the government is considering expanding factories to increase production capacity.

 

However, the materials used in face masks have to be imported from countries that have reported no confirmed cases of COVID-19. The government will prevent the hoarding of masks while making sure that their price remains at 2.50 baht each.

Songkran is going to be the beginning of an infection disaster.  Millions of people in the streets, in close proximity with one another, face masks discarded, where just one infected person could infect hundreds of others, who then infect thousands more, etc.  Thailand is no where close to being prepared to handle this potential health bomb.

Not so much under the radar as just totally ignored. And during a period when S Korea was hitting all the headlines.
 

Why aren’t all arrivals being asked to fill in health cards declaring their past and future movements, as they were during sars and as I was asked to do when arriving in Bali 2 weeks ago?

 

the Thai government seems to be well behind the curve, possibly because they spent so much time trying to save the tourist industry with false bravado, rather than implementing real preventative measures.

totally agree, going ahead with Songkran is absolute lunacy, right now I am reasonably confident socializing and mixing within a reduced circle, if Songkran goes ahead all bets are off

And already they cannot trace over 1100 Thais that arrived back home after 1st March

Obviously, these people were  just allowed to roam free once they had returned, without being Quarantined or probably even checked.

The situation in Thailand now really is farcical.  But the situation is far from funny, with these Baffoons in charge, they are putting all the people in the Country in harms way

Didn't Old Fatty just the other day publicly proclaim that the Thai govt. has no legal authority to impose a mandatory quarantine for Thais returning from Korea now?  (Which I called B.S. at the time...)

 

 

I guess they found the legal authority, somewhere, or failing that, just made it up, as they are accustomed to doing.

Yet an earlier post said some 1,100 workers were missing after returning from S.Korea and the health service had asked immigration to help find out where they were.

Plus another post stated that special buses had been commissioned to take them home so as not to affect public transport??

 

Is something not adding up here?

My thoughts exactly. I’d presumed that some sort of system for relevant agencies to cooperate had already been established. The fact that this has only just been done is shameful, really.

So thailand which up until about 2 weeks ago had received 9M chinese tourist annually, has a total of 47 infected and 1 or thought I'd read 2 deaths. Yea, cancel everything, close down schools and businesses, scare the population, fear fear fear because you can never be too careful (bs).

 

there's another website that tracks annual deaths per year by country, maybe I'll remember the url, or just look. heart disease, accidents, normal flu, drug/alcohol od, and a dozen other causes far out number WuFlu deaths. but hey, just in case... factories, businesses, schools, close'em, shut it all down, never mind that that will totally F the economy.

 

Again, 2 people in thailand died of WuFlu, or more likely complications of other ailments plus WuFlu. Does that response fit the problem?   problem-reaction-solution.

When will Thailand decide to take some responsibility and reveal how many contagions there are in the Country?
In a Country that is at the top of tourist arrivals from China, which had 13,000 tourists from Wuhan in January, how is it possible that there are only 50 contagions and 1 death?

Or do you not go to test cases, and people don't go to hospitals for the cost of testing? (just a question, not irony, I don't know the cost)

To hear the Thai authorities seem to contract the virus by going abroad, to read the news it seems there is a strong discrimination of Italians in the recent days (without the intervention of the embassy) , but who has the courage and takes the responsibility to reveal the authentic numbers in the national territory?

First, if you believe the numbers being put out by the Thai government, you are: A) Someone who has never actually lived in Thailand and knows the government will lie their butts off to protect the "image of Thailand", or B) a fool. 

My wife's cousin is a nurse in a major Chiang Mai hospital.  She told my wife 2 days ago, they have FIVE (5) confirmed cases, with patients IN the hospital, which have NOT been reported to authorities, because they don't want to create a panic.  That is just ONE hospital.  How many others may be doing the same thing. 

One infected person in a crowd could infect dozens more, Those dozen, unaware they have been infected, could then infect hundreds more, and those hundreds - thousands, etc. I am not "scare mongering" here, but looking at the very possible reality of the situation.  You should try that sometime.
