Dear members,

my relatives (Italian Passport holders) arrived to Bangkok on February 25th, receiving their 30 days on arrival stamp and with their return flight scheduled for March 15th, being this Sunday.

With all the Corona craze going on, their airline simply cancelled their flight as they are temporary not operating any flights that go to Milan, so it looks like my relatives are going to stay here longer than expected until they receive a new flight from their Airline.

My question now is, how are they to extend their visa - do they need to go to Chaengwhattana or any other Immigration office to get some sort of extension, or what other options are there available?

Some expert help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

They can go to their nearest immigration office and apply for a 30 day extension. Bring copies of the passport, a passport sized photo (*) and 1900THB.

*At Chaengwattana these can be obtained on the ground floor, in small immigration offices these services are not offered on site but have to be obtained in advance

Where are they staying?

In Bangkok, so I assume the best option would be Chaengwhattana?

The visa exempt entry can be extended for a further 30 days on payment of 1,900 baht at the immigration office. The Italian embassy is also providing letters that can be taken to Immigration to request extensions of stay in such situations. If you need extra time, I suggest you contact the embassy to get full details. I think you just send scans of the passports, and they send you back the letters, but there may be a little more to it.

Thank you very much for all the info! Appreciate the insight

Details as to how your relatives can obtain Embassy letters - should they, in the event, require further 30-day extensions - are given (in Italian) on the Italian Embassy website at:-

No need for any letter. 30 days are routine and would be given.

Hardly likely that the coronavirus situation is likely to blow over before an initial 30-day extension period has expired, though, I would have thought!

The airline that cancelled the flight must arrange an alternative flight, if necessary with an other airline.

Considering that the cancelled flight would have been on 15 March there is probably not enough time to arrange an alternative flight for that date and the passenger should go to immigration first thing on Monday morning for the 30-day extension.

It's the only option if staying in BKK.

OP. I’m a Brit living in Italy. Due to fly to Rome 4th April. Thai Airways cancelled that flight and rebooked me on a flight to Frankfurt on the 3rd April. That was that, then find your on way home !
I’m on a Non O so will sit it out and the rebook when the panic subsides.

Good luck.

Anyone already attempted to get 30 days extra with the embassy letter in thai imm? Or everyone is receiving 7?

At the moment it seems to be only the Italian embassy that is issuing the letter and it will only be needed/available if you are both Italian and have already had a 30 day extension. this information may be out of date.

I have heard that some offices may issue an extension with only a proof of a cancellation of your flight others are requiring the embassy letter.

So my relatives have an entry stamp (visa on arrival) from the 24th February which is valid until March 24th. The day I've made this post we sent an email to the embassy explaining them that the flight has been cancelled, and upon sending a scan of the passport they issued 3 letters, one for each person via email directly.

Here is how the letter looks like (see attached).

So the Airline still didn't provide any new flight and therefore we are planning to go to Chanegwhattana tomorrow - is there any specific counter for this, or should we just pick a ticket as per usual? Any other things that we might need to bring besides the Passports and the letters?

Some advise would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
