Covid-19: Fighting the virus! Immigration chief in mask flanked by commandos

 

 

Thai media has pictured the chief of Thailand's Immigration Bureau in a face mask flanked by heavily armed commandos. 

 

Pol-Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang was giving the latest news after one of his men tested positive for coronavirus at Suvarnabhumi airport. 

 

It appears that the officer concerned became infected after wiping his face with an infected plastic glove after handling passports of incoming tourists.

 

Lt-Gen Sompong said that he was ordered to visit his stricken officer in Klang Hospital on Wednesday by RTP chief Gen Chakthip Chaijinda. 

 

The officer concerned was on the mend.

Sompong said that the Immigration bureau on the whole were not sagging and were in good spirits, determined to offer a full service to the public. They are performing their duties dealing with 100,000 people a day at all entry points with full regard to safety and screening procedures.

 

Region 2 spokesman Pol Col Cherngron Rimphadee backed up his chief reiterating that measures to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus have been in place for 2 months. 

 

These include daily checks of IB staff before and after work, the wearing of masks, plastic gloves and cleaning of vital areas.

 

Fingerprint scanners were being wiped down every ten minutes, he said. 

 

He believed that the infected immigration officer had contracted the virus after wiping his face and eyes with a plastic glove after touching tourists' passports.

 

Meanwhile, Naew Na reported that a life insurance policy for all IB staff in the sum of 50,000 baht has been initiated in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

What is it with the Commandos ?

Are the Government trying to send a message to non face mask wearing Farang, or are they trying to tell the runaway Thais from South Korea " we will hunt you down ", or is it simply that the Government feel threatened by Covid19 / peoples perception of them, or whatever.

That's what I thought too, on first look. But I'm pretty sure not.  I think it's the crew cut look that makes them tend to all look the same.

I arrived on Saturday morning. Not a hand sanitiser in sight anywhere in swampy - not even in the bog.

I brought my own 60 ml bottle of Purell. I used it before and after the fingerprint scanner. Then they were umming and ahhing about whether I could take it on the plane to Ubon.
