It’s Worth The Fight

It’s worth it to stay home if you’re over 60.  Even if you’re healthy, consider staying home, letting others shop, wiping down the packages when they arrive.

Hand washing, hand washing, hand washing... learn how to do it right... You think you know, but DO YOU??  Learn proper hand washing.

This virus is bad, but will likely pass.

Now is the time to stay at home, observe hand washing , don’t allow others in your home at this time, avoid going out, and essentially stay put.

Let the virus pass.

Will this save your life?

Maybe, hopefully so, but it will also save others.

Stay put, keep others out of your home.

Keep at home, contain contacts, and you will help save lives.

Remember a 1:10 bleach solution kills most stuff if you let it dry for at least 30 minutes.

Stay home, keep a modicum of clean, avoid contacts—and you will save lives.

This virus will pass.  But the time to stay diligent is now.

PatOngo,

This is exactly what I plan to do.

If some super-virus comes along, killing everything in its path, well..then all bets are off.

But until then, let’s attempt to manage what seems manageable.

Things could change on a dime, but for now, social distancing and basic hygiene-plus seem like stellar tools.

I have a lifelong background in healthcare, so I’m not just screaming up a tree:

Everything I put forth is reasonable and doable.

Just got back from buying building materials...store was not crowded.  Then stopped by a new restaurant on the way home...half full...never saw a face mask...

This could be my last posting...????

I know the ones already who hope so!   ????

I went and bought groceries today and somehow survived.  Never managed to find any toilet paper though.  I can always do it the Thai way and use my hands.  I am going to the gym next.  Pray for me!!!

????

Are people going to stay home for 6 months? Just not realistic. Or 12 months? Its going to be around a while.

Go out and just be careful. Take zinc and fast. Go for walks.

Make yourself stronger.

Someone sitting around in fear is making themselves weaker so if you go out in 6 mths and get it you are more likely to die.

The current tactics involve spreading out and delaying the inevitable outbreak so that those suffering severe respiratory symptoms don’t overwhelm the health care facilities.

Ultimately, just like Influenza, most people will contract Covid-19 at some point within the next couple of years, making best efforts to control the spread rate means health facilities are not overwhelmed at the same time.

Additionally, if area’s are successful in delaying the spread of Covid-19 for a sufficient amount of time vaccinations can be issued and the impact of any subsequent outbreak is minimised.

All tactics employed so far are not some much about preventing the spread, the aim seems to be ‘delaying’ the spread so that medical facilities are not overwhelmed and there is time to generate a vaccine.

Of course, an additional facet of the Covid-19 outbreak is that is has significantly greater impact on those older than 60 yrs. The majority of those in positions of decision making power are older than 60 yrs (i.e. Politicians, CEO’s of major companies etc) - they are becoming very effective in ’shutting down’ the world once the true potential is being realised.

Indeed.

OP: load of bollllox. This thing, in the great scheme of things, is so minuscule as to be irrelevant really. You, and most other folk focusing on media, are going way over the top as to treat it as the apocalypse.

Wash your hands all you want, isolate for 12 months etc, after which you'll get royally bitten on the bottom.

Going forward, most logical option would be for all to be exposed with a little bit to fire the immune system.

Highly flawed thinking...  Only once a vaccine is created and widely distributed can we not be too concerned about wide spread exposure. Until then the mortality rate is sufficiently high that we would all be impacted in some way or form.

Now we are not worried because we (the vast majority) of us do not know anyone who has been impacted by this Virus.

However, with a 2% mortality rate the impact would be the same as cancer if most of us were exposed.

We all know someone who's life has been impacted by cancer, a friend or a loved one has passed away as a result of cancer, or a few of us have been fortunately enough to survive.

Once there is a Vaccine for Covid-19 its impact will be greatly minimised and potentially eradicated, much like Polio, Measles etc or more realistically, its impact will be similar to that of seasonal influenza. But first, there has to be time for a Vaccine to be created, generated and distributed.

Until then the ‘First’ outbreak has the potential to impact the lives of everyone on the planet in some way or form (i.e. the loss of a loved one, especially our elders), so no, the most logical option would NOT be for all to be exposed, that is the most deadly option and a rather unintelligent, ill thought out absence of logic.

You think this is a new thing ? Happens every year - Get Over It !

They said the same for Swine Flu, SARS, MERS ... Y2K ...

And what happened - SFA is what happened.

Some people get it and die - same same always

does this mean you could technically always be like upwind from a direct cough?

With the exception of medical masks, and antiseptics, hoarding has been at a minimum around Thailand.

I'm just glad that the "hysteria" has inspired a bit of hygiene awareness.

Sure, there are still plenty of people who will not wash their hands, cover their coughs, or take up other hygienic practices.

But, I am thankful for those that have picked up some better habits.

half full...never saw a face mask...

that is because the WHO and public health representatives around the world state that wearing a face mask will have very effect in preventing infection from the virus, indeed wearing a face mask may give people  false sense of security. if you are infected a face mask may offer some reduction in infecting other people - but if you're infected you should be self isolating.

the consensus is as the OP stated; wash your hands often and for at least 20 seconds and stay away from large gatherings of people, betond that it's up to everyone to do their own risk assessment and act appropriately.

I am staying indoors because the pollution is beyond bad

I am not that worried about the virus

But still, not a good time to be a CM resident

MERS had a total of 2492 cases of which 858 people died. An extremely high (34.4%) case fatality rate, fortunately a very low transmission rate.

SARS had a Total 8098 cases of which 774 deaths – a high (9.4%) case fatality rate, but again, fortunately a very low transmission rate.

Swine Flu - SIV and S-OIV with numerous subtypes (eg H1N1 to H2N3 was contracted by 10-21% of the global population with 150,000-575,000 fatalities.

A case fatality rate of between 0.01% to 0.08%

As you can see, swine flu was relatively devastating in numbers alone because of its high transmission rate, but its case fatality rate is quite low.

It has been reported that Covid-19 has a case fatality rate of ±2%.

Italy now has 15113 cases, with 1016 deaths, a very high case fatality rate of 6.7%

The concern with Covid-19 is its seemly very high transmission rate, similar to that of influenza (or Swine Flu)

If you think of Covid-19 with the same transmission rate as Swine Flu (which may well be the case), then the numbers would be catastrophic if contracted by 10-21% of the global population.

The numbers would be between 680,000,000 (680 million) to 1,428,000,000 (1.4 billion) cases.

A case fatality rate of 2% would result in between 13.6 million and 28.5 million deaths.

A case fatality rate of 6.7% (Italy) would result in between 45.5million and 95.7million deaths.

These are real world figures, but will probably still be argued with by people unable to comprehend the risk and prefer to pull the wool over their own eyes and pass comments such as ‘Happens every year, get over it’ !!!!

Apologies, not idiots...  they’re just people who are choose not to avail themselves of factual information before drawing an opinion.... why let the facts get in the way of a bit of bravado?

I too was of the opinion that this was just 'hysteria driven hysteria’, I based my opinion on selective information and conformation bias. However, in keeping an open mind the more I have educated myself on past outbreaks and compared them to the facts (so far) from this current Covid-19 outbreak I have had to accept that my initial ‘they’re all panicking over nothing’ opinion was wrong.

The statistics tell us what is happening, the experts use these statistics to analysis the potential of this virus and the potential is frightening. The video below outlines the exponential growth of this outbreak so far, at the moment do not know at which numbers the growth rate will start to drop off.
