Thailand's health officials have said that social media posts about free coronavirus tests for people at 18 private hospitals are fake news.

There are 35 establishments nationwide that are authorised to carry out testing.

Thaweesin Visanuyothin a spokesman for the Thai health ministry said that free treatment depends on whether the person being tested fits the correct profile.

They have to have come from an infected area, been in close proximity to an infected person or be suffering from a respiratory disease to be treated free.

If you just want a test you have to pay for it.

If, however, you are tested and it comes back positive the test is free.

Daily News did not specify if this referred to non-Thais as well as Thais.

Chalerm Hanphanit of the private hospitals association said that Bamrungrat was the only private hospital in Bangkok authorised to carry out the test.

Those that were authorised were at testing centers and public hospitals nationwide and not the 18 that were named as authorised in social media posts in Bangkok.

However, one such post that was deemed helpful by many was shared by Facebook user Chalakorn Wannapokin, who posted about her recent experience of being tested for COVID-19 at Chula Hospital in Bangkok.

The post did not say that treatment was free but only free in some cases but lists of many private hospitals were given.

The post also claimed a wide disparity in charges ranging from just over 3,000 baht to 25,000 baht. Thais and foreigners were likely to pay varying fees the post and comments suggested.

Among the medical facilities that can be contacted for tests are Sirirat, Ramathibodi, Chulalongkorn and Ratchwithi in Bangkok.

Outside the capital people can get tested at Songkhla Nakharin, Maharat in Nakhon Ratchasima, Srinakharin Khon Kaen, Lampang Hospital, Nakhon Pathom Hospital and a disease prevention center in Saraburi.
