At 100+ new cases every day lately, I think we're getting to the point where timely and complete contract tracing is basically going to prove beyond the capability of the MoPH, except for the most rudimentary family and such contacts. As a result, lots of folks out there spreading it around and not knowing any better until they come down with symptoms, by which point it's too late in terms of containment.

I agree. Too late for tracing back individual infections or even clusters.

The resources should be spent more wisely to prevent a mass outbreak.

I see the Covid-19 tracker is back online:

https://covidtracker.5lab.co/en

According to the news yesterday, Chonburi has 30 cases, yet I only see two in Laem Chabang (one new confirmed case) and four in Chonburi City itself, and possibly one or two that have been sanitised down near Sattahip. So where are the other twenty-odd cases in Chonburi province?

Thailand reports 107 new cases of Covid-19

By The Nation

Thailand's total number of Covid-19 cases rose to 934, after 107 new infections were confirmed over a 24-hour period, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, said on Wednesday (March 25).

The cases can be divided into three groups.

Those in the first group of 27 are connected to cluster cases -- four people had attended a boxing event in a stadium, five had worked and been to entertainment venues, four had attended religious ceremonies and 14 had had close contact with others previously confirmed as infected. They included a freelancer, a company employee, merchant, students, taxi drivers, police and prisoners.

The second group comprised 13 people of whom six had just returned from overseas (2 Thais and 4 foreigners -- British, Finn, American, and German), five were working in crowded areas or close to foreigners, and two are doctors -- one of them is a surgeon who got a mild condition working with 25 medical staff who now need to self-quarantine.

The last group of 67 are being investigated on the source of the infection.

Meanwhile, 13 people have fully recovered and returned home.

As of March 25, the total number of confirmed cases in the country stands at 934 -- 860 are under treatment, 70 have recovered and been discharged, and there have been four deaths.

More than 407,000 cases have been confirmed in 169 countries and regions, double the tally of the previous week. There have been at least 18,000 deaths globally.

They might have the capability but their own report seem to suggest they are not in a hurry.

Thanks. That suggests 7.5k tests in some 2 months. But i wonder are the separately listed PUI cases under investigation not being tested?

But besides that is there a word for ‘hurry’ in Thai?

Here's the latest nationality breakdown of confirmed COVID cases as the MoPH's Thai language daily update report issued Tuesday March 24, which listed 827 confirmed cases, an increase of 106 cases over the prior day:

Thai -- 613  74%

Unknown -- 152  18%

(not sure why there's a sudden spike in the unknown category)

Chinese -- 26  3%

Other Nationality -- 36  4%

Danish 4, Japanese 3, England 4, Italy 3, American 2, Canada 2, Singapore 1, French Guinea 1, Belgium 1, France 5, Pakistan 2, Myanmar 1, Malaysia 1, Switzerland 3, New Zealand 1, Sweden 2.

--------------------

As of Tuesday, the government reported 5357 total patients hospitalized as COVID patients under investigation -- 3095 in government hospitals, and 2262 in government hospitals.

Of the 827 confirmed cases, Four deaths, 70 treated and released, and 753 currently hospitalized, including 4 in serious/critical condition.

Since the beginning, a total of 13,027 patients under investigation. Of those, 5357 currently hospitalized, 6291 treated and discharged, and 1379 being monitored outside of hospitals. Among the total, the govt reported a current backlog of 4754 PUI awaiting lab results.

Compared to the same daily report from a week ago on Tuesday, March 17 vs. Tuesday, March 24:

The total number of hospitalized PUI rose from 2457 to 5357, up 118%

The total number of COVID PUI rose from 7045 to 13,027, up 85%

The number of confirmed COVID cases rose from 147 to 827, up 463%

The number of PUIs awaiting test results rose from 2220 to 4754, up 114%

Current PUI hospitalizations more than doubling in one week is not a good sign.

Seriously, I can't understand how their numbers works. It might be done on purpose. ????

Who could? More often than not in my experience here it is lack of coordination (in a situation under tremendous pressure) rather than devious intention. Separate authorities will collate numbers differently and i wouldn’t be totally surprised if some of that happens via triple carbon copy paper records that need double signatures. In the end the resulting confusion from messed up totals might fulfill some purpose. It’d be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

It's just speculations, but it seems that the +/- 100 cases per day is the maximum lab capacity they can currently test.

Probably a lot of undetected and hidden cases.

You are correct, more testing will reveal more positive results, and that is the ones who can get tested because they are close to facilities.

Those of us living now, have never seen anything like this pandemic, nor are we ready for the aftermath, either mentally, physically or financially

And now ThaiPBS adds the element of Thai medical staff beginning to fall sick and others be quarantined:

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailand-reports-107-new-covid-19-cases-including-two-doctors/

Quote

The Thai Public Health Ministry reported 107 new COVID-19 cases today (Wednesday), including two medical professionals, bringing the total confirmed infections in the country to 934, including six medical personnel.

Dr. Thaveesilp Wissanuyothin, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry, said that the two newly-infected doctors developed minor symptoms, but continued to work and dine with their colleagues.

As a result, he said that 15 medical personnel, and ten others in close contact with this cluster, have been suspended from work, pending further observation and tests.

So much for quarantine, or were they so frazzled and busy they felt obliged to continue working and socialising with colleagues?

I think you are right because the last few days the new cases have been about the same.

There are two weak links in the Thai system that I have not seen covered by any news outlet:
1. The respirator situation ... how many they have and what are they doing to get more. Prayut should meet with the carmakers here so they can retool their factories to start pumping out respirators as is happening in UK and in the US voluntarily.
2. Testing ... How many tests can they carry out daily. Why aren't they getting more tests from South Korea which has been aggressive in testing. The government should be paying for all tests considering that the majority of Thais cannot afford them.

Thailand is no different to many other countries around the world. Testing only very sick, vulnerable, or people who actually came into contact with already infected persons. They don't have enough testing kits, isolated beds or ventilators.

As usual useless data , we are never told where these new positive virus people are and how they contracted it.

There are periodic updates on where by province the new cases are arising:

https://www.thaienquirer.com/9975/coronavirus-cases-in-thailand-now-in-at-least-46-provinces/

As for how people have contracted the virus, these days in Thailand, there are so many new cases mounting daily that the authorities I think are losing track of the ability to identify the likely causes of all of them.
