The government has approved extension of stay for migrant labourers up to November 30, exempting them from overstay penalty.

Government Spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said yesterday the government has backed the Ministry of Labour's review of the Cabinet resolution on March 24 on the period of leniency for migrant labourers and their dependants.

Migrant labourers can temporarily stay in the Kingdom until November 30. They can use the list of migrant employment requirements issued by the Department of Employment and the current work permit.

It would be ironic if they saved the migrant workers but forced out the farangs.  after all the buildings are built, there's no money from abroad.

do migrant workers get the 300 baht minimum per day? (maybe that's changed).

don't forget:  a farang can spend 2000 baht in a day and not lose any sleep.  while a migrant worker USUALLY worries about 20 baht.

I fail to see the relevance of that whatsoever.

Back in 97 there were Burmese carrying 100kg rice sacks, when the crash hit they were sent home. If unemployment is bad enough it'll happen again and we'll be dependent on young rural men who have not worked like previous generations. They are in for a shock.

This is good for legal workers whose work permits will be expiring in this period because they wouldn't be able to get home right now anyway. Those on MOU visas get 2 years but there'll be a lot of those who went home and can't get back into Thailand. It will be interesting to see when they're allowed back. I guess those working illegally and doing monthly border runs aren't covered. I know one guy from Laos who's been doing border runs every 30 days for over 5 years. The Thai authorities just seem to let this go but that might change.
