Udon Thani farmers decline rice sales

Most rice farmers in Udon Thani province have decided not to sell their ouput to save them for their relatives returning from other provinces due to the Covid-19 crisis and lockdown, Supot Saetang, president of the Udon Thani Rice Mill Club, said.

He said that Udon Thani had not been affected much by the virus situation, since 80 per cent of production in the province is for household consumption while the balance 20 per cent is exported.

The decision to not sell is also because the price has reached Bt16,000 per tonne, well above the price assured by the government.

“The paddy has been stored in farmers’ storages for household consumption and as reserves for a famine, which could be caused by a future drought,” the president said.

Sounds legit, and possibly they can sell it for double the price within few weeks.

Future drought? still ongoing...... Also last year the price of rice shot up during the wet season as stocks were supposedly 'low'. Buying your rice back at double the price hurt. No-one will sell any until after the new harvest is in this year.

Are the "farmers" getting smart & cutting out the middle man - about time!

Though not sure where they are getting the rice from, very little grown in the dry season, planting starts when the rains arrive, hopefully in a few weeks, strange article!

many farmers are too small with too low production to cut out the middle man, such farmers should form co-operatives for selling, cheaper bulk buying and investing in common owned machinery
