Thai govt to decide on extending emergency decree, easing COVID-19 restrictions

The government will this week decide whether or not to ease the restrictions put in place to help combat the spread of COVID-19.

With the current emergency decree set to expire on April 30, Thai media reports a decision on whether or not the decree will be extended is imminent.

The Thai government is eager to try and alleviate the economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 while at the same time safeguarding against any further outbreak.

Meetings held between high ranking government officials were due to be held on Monday and a decision could even be reached later today, prior to being put forward for Cabinet approval on Tuesday.

The National Security Council will propose the emergency decree is extended for one more month so the pandemic can be properly brought under control, Naewna reported

However, some businesses, such as shopping malls, are expected to be allowed to reopen, albeit with strict social distancing measures in place.

Some domestic travel restrictions may be also lifted but the ban on inbound flights is expected to be extended until mid-May.

It is also not yet known if the restrictions regarding the sale of alcohol will be lifted. While alcohol sales at supermarkets and convenience stores may be permitted, bars and nightclubs are expected to remain closed.

Last week, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said that restrictions could be eased if the virus had been controlled locally.

"If everyone cooperates, strictly maintain new habits including wearing masks and social distancing, the government will be aware of the change and gradually relax measures”, Dr Taweesin said.

Just read that the centre of covid19 admin are recommending the state of emergency be extended 'til the end of May. Anutin also couldn't wait til the 12.30 announcement and told reporters that the numbers of cases today are in single digits.

Seems to me that the numbers being given to the public make for nice reading, but the government know they aren't reflective of what's really going on.

And the populace will bow down in thanks as each little restriction is eased.

The government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration reportedly resolved today that the state of emergency should be extended for another month after it was to expire on April 30. The resolution is in line with recommendations from national security officials and the Public Health Ministry.

The government clamped the state of emergency on March 26 until April 30 and imposed a 10pm to 4am curfew on April 3.

As it more or less normal here now even  barbers are open, just need Hompro to get its ass into gear and all will be well

More importantly P what about the beer Ban yes or no?

It's a foregone conclusion that the state of emergency will be extended. The big question is, to what extent will they allow life to return to something like normal?

The emergency decree has to be in place until people stop complaining and understand it is helping them and the rest of the country to stay healthy. Not talking about the economic side here. Just that maybe people can learn and not break the rules next time. If that is achieved, then it might take much shorter next time.

Central has informed their tenants to be ready for opening on the first of May.

Air Asia and Thai Lion Air expect to start some domestic flights at the same time.

And the time after that, and the time after that  each time a bit more "normalcy" taken away and the whole world in an economic depression.

seems sensible to me, lift some restrictions but keep the social distance in place.

Do you think Prayut should vote in favour of continuing the emergency decree or do you not care what he does?

No governments on the planet know the true infection and death numbers.

this can only be established by accurate testing of entire populations, pre and post death.

this is an openly known and tabled fact. No governments in the free and semi- free world present other than this fact.

If it means ensuring the transmission rate of infections drop then sure, why not.

So many people in the world are seemingly thrilled to have their personal freedoms taken away by a handful of power crazed authoritarians making decisions on how we can live our lives.... boggles the mind.

Further, a complete lack of understanding of how this 'crisis' is their wet dream test case for controlling the masses and the concept of a slippery slope. The naivete is breathtaking.

yes, he's done a good job ( IMO ) with controlling the COVID-19 outbrake, and hopefully his decisions continue to help minimize infection transmission without prolonged damage to the economy albeit a balancing act.

If this measure helps support a lower to minimal infection rate from a deadly virus then it's a no brainer.
