Booze industry urges govt to lift prohibition

Alcohol-industry organisations have asked the prime minister to lift the ban on selling alcohol, imposed as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19. The request came in a proposal from seven organisations – led by the Thai Fruit Wine and Local Spirit Producer Association, Thailand Bartender Association, and Thai Wine Association – to ease alcohol-related restrictions.

The alcohol associations asked the government not to prolong the prohibition on sales beyond April 30, and allow beer and liquor to be sold via take-away and delivery services.

They also asked the government to ease the tax burden and help manage the destruction of spoiled liquor amid the Covid-19 crisis, when entertainment venues have been closed.

Meanwhile the associations want the government to lift the ban on the wholesale trade of alcohol, which they said is preventing producers from transporting their products to retailers where stocks can be safely stored in refrigerated conditions.

They also asked authorities to inform them in advance before announcing future alcohol-related orders.

The Excise Department has collected Bt132.236 billion in tax on alcohol so far this year, including Bt70.090 billion from beer and Bt62.146 billion from liquor.

The big breweries have some clout, or at least their owners do.....Lets hope they are in favour

And why is Chang and Singha not also asking for the ban to be lifted? They should be speaking the loudest that is unless they are being rewarded to be quiet....

I read another article a few minute ago where Anutin stated that he won't consider lifting the ban. The link is here. https://www.thaienquirer.com/12365/anutin-denies-request-by-vendors-to-partially-open-alcohol-sales/ Not sure if links to the Thai Enquirer are allowed. This does not make good reading but as the guy has made more u-turns than the average Thai pickup driver then I wouldn't read too much into it.

I was wondering that the government was powerful and brave enough to introduce such an alcohol ban. But they did - this speaks for the government.

it's not going to happen, Prayut asked for help from the Leo/Chang/Singha and other super riches and they played unconcerned (dumb) & deaf as a post,  now that's his (Prayut)  turn, pay back time

My wife wife got 2 cases of beer today from the Mom 'n Pop shop I have always patronised.

Any extension of the ban will simply not work because people will not put up with it, and by people I mean both the customers, and the retailers.

To give an example, our village is just one of 25 in a small jurisdiction outside of Chiang Rai, There are hundreds if not thousands of other villages like ours in the province as a whole.

The wholesaler in our village has a warehouse where he can store 100's upon 100's of cases of beer all on pallets.

It worked until now and I am sure if the government wants it it will work for a while longer. Should I feel pity if they punish your Mom 'n Pop shop and you?

In what sense has it "worked"?

I think it is quicker to tell in what sense it didn't work. Drunken people can create many problems.

In all fairness I did find a can of Leo in my fridge, and although desperation is setting in, I had to pour it down the sink after I remembered what it tastes like.

From what I know Lao Kao is made putting a covered aluminium pot in the sun for two days with two measures of rice and one measure of sugar.
Does anybody know, how much water?

Agree. Also he will look weak or worse be accused of taking backhanders if he relents. He has ended up between a rock and hard place.....my guess is that the ban will stay in place (saving me a fortune)

I hope that the government listens to them.

A beer or 2 at dinner time is not too much to ask.

Three and a wake up guys, hang in there.

Maybe they have. Chang, along with Sang Som is part of the ThaiBev group which is the biggest beverage company in Thailand. The owner is billionaire who is, I believe the second richest person in Thailand so I doubt he needs any form of rewarding.

DT'S are biting the a-r-s-e big time.????
