Exactly, they have said workers on furlough in the UK can pick fruit and veg, that's because the vast majority of furloughed workers will be unemployed soon. Also with the UK, the eastern Europeans workers are not arriving this year in large numbers to pick the fruit and veg, so if you don't pick the fruit/veg then no benefit money.

 

Anyway I'm for a walk around my desolate high street, stroll past the closed pubs and restaurants, so sad!

On point one think they,'ll be a clamp down on previous policies of economic migration,and a swing to the right wing (as previously stated) how deep this will go is anyone's guess,there will be a lot of civil unrest too as enforced austerity and unemployment bites.

Good link, thanks, btw, i was talking with an ex-journalist yesterday, and he was rather dismissive of the official numbers of the world population, saying roughly 2/3 billions.

Personally i tend to believe those numbers (7,7 billions) and possibly a few millions more which are not on the census count.

I was supposed to go to Italy before the summer, now i'm rubbing my 2 neurons and wondering what to do.

Possibly, as some say, there could be a few nano-chips in the vaccine, with some water and a couple drops of leach, as per suggestion of a famous leader.

What you describe can be summed up in one word: collapse.

 

I have been thinking for many years that we are heading to a new Middle Age.

 

That is, a very long period of stagnation, during which a lot of knowledge is lost, the world is divided in ever smaller entities, conflicts constantly erupt here and there, all the wealth is concentrated in very few hands, the populace is kept under control by constant surveillance and debt, science is rejected and replaced by dogma (think PC for example).

 

All this was already well under way before the pandemic, which will only accelerate the process, but is not the cause of it.

Western economies have two huge problems: mountains of debt and mountains of retirees (without the means to pay the promised pensions = unfunded liabilities).

 

The pandemic has pushed the debt mountain much higher, which guarantees permanent stagnation, at best (see Japan since 1990).

 

The problem is that our overindebted economies cannot survive at stall speed, they need constant growth, or they crash...

First, and foremost, International tourism will be decimated, for years. More people will holiday in their home country.

 

Second, due to the drop in international tourism. Airlines will fail. A lot. Half the planes flying in January will probably never fly again. But good for the environment.

 

Third, while the virus continues to circulate, public transport will be underused. More people will use personal transport. Bad for the Environment.

 

Fourth, big recession. Many companies will fail, as already impoverished by the virus, and recession will finish them off. it will last about 2 years.

 

Fifth, high unemployment. Old job gone, and many surviving companies will use more virus proof machines, not people. Possibly the start of universal income, because work will become an unobtainable luxury. Free soaps and Netflix for all.

 

Sixth, increased nationalism. Foreigners will be blamed by  governments for their problems, more trade barriers, supply chains will be brought home. The Chinese belt and road will wither to the string and path....

 

Seventh, i speculate that as many posters do not seem to care if old people die of the virus, governments will build the first soylent green factories - got to recycle that pension money for the benefit of governments and workers !
