Despite the impact of COVID-19 on the border closures and travel restrictions, wildlife trafficking might be on the decline but its stockpiling of raw ivory remains a concern, according to The Wildlife Justice Commission. The WJC said in its recent report that as wildlife traders could not access the Chinese market, the stockpiling of raw ivory is believed to pile up in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

It said that for first three months of this year, Vietnamese traders offered more than 22 tonnes of pangolin scales to WJC’s investigator, which could be substituting ivory in the illegal market in China.

Sarah Stoner, director of WJC’s Intelligence said: “It is clear that COVID-19 prevention measures have affected wildlife trafficking operation, but the stockpiling of huge quantities of wildlife products in many countries still resume, even at intensified levels, once restrictions are lifted.” She said despite the air transportation closure, sea and road transport remain an alternative option for wildlife traffickers.
