Swimming pools at condos in Thailand to remain closed until further notice

Condominium and public pools in Thailand will remain closed until further notice due to safety concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, Natapanu Nopakun, spokesperson for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration confirmed that condominium pools will remain closed in order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Mr Natapanu said there were a “number of unavoidable risk factors that prevent the opening of both public pools and in condominiums”.

These risk factors include saliva, which may help spread the infection, stress on breathing while swimming and difficulties in controlling or limiting the number of people using the swimming pool.

In addition, there are fears that people will congregate or socialize around communal pool areas, which would be in violation of the Emergency Decree currently in place in Thailand.

Condo residents in Thailand had been hopeful that the restrictions currently in place regarding communal pools would be one of the measures that will be lifted by the government later this week.

However, that now appears not to be the case.

Precisely. I have given all the known data to CDC, and yet they still say "no".

They cannot make a special law for your building. And people can gather in and around the pool and because being wet cannot use masks. Also some people lying in the sun will avoid to use masks so that not halve of their face will remain white.

At our condo we have 2 pools both 25 meters so out of 100 units I think there is about 10 people in the building and it's not open to the public, if you dont have a keycard you cant gain access

As I have explained several times, there is a misconception about [opening] condo pools. Most people, including those at CDC think of a pool more in terms of a social gathering venue. If you use the appropriately chlorinated pool only, with limited numbers, and prohibit social gathering round it, you have one of the safest spaces to avoid transmission of Covid 19. This protocol can easily be implemented by condo management, together with the requirement that users shower before and after swimming.

It's really that simple. To continue prohibition of condo pool usage for exercise is ridiculous, compared to what is being allowed to open...Chatuchak market (social distancing?)...beauty clinics and weight loss clinics (close person to person contact?)...foot massages (close person to person contact?)...outdoor stadiums for team sports, (no chance of saliva, sweat being dispersed there?)...

Muriatic acid and chlorine would vaporize and obliterate Covid upon contact. So saliva is a non starter. Simply more ignorance, and fear mongering, from an administration that is so devoid of scientific facts, it boggles the mind. Social distancing can be practiced anywhere. People need exercise, and recreation. And people need to be outdoors. This encourages better health, and strengthens the immune system. They should have gotten rid of Anutin a long time ago. The nation needs someone with an education in health. He has proven himself over and over again to be inept, ignorant, and in completely over his head. A true BOB (bottom of the barrel) pick, totally without merit.

Chlorine does not kill COVID on contact:

To effectively kill the virus, make sure the surface stays wet with the disinfectant for at least 10 minutes before wiping with a clean towel. If an EPA registered disinfectant is not available a 2% chlorine bleach solution can be used.

Chlorine in swimming pool water is measured in single digit parts per million.

sounds like a swimming pool to me.

Should we call for Thailand to abandon all of the restrictions, open the borders for the influx of infected tourists, cancel all the quarantines, open all the bars, clubs, sports venues, beaches, pools, etc. Accept half to one million deaths and get over with it. But 6 months later when it is over, this forum will be a very quiet place, given average age of folks here.

If saunas kill the virus, why isn't hospitols installing saunas and everyone being cured...

So if you swam in a swimming pool with a 2% chlorine level, it would still take up to 10 minutes to kill the virus -- and probably you, too.

So you are allowed to go up and down in a 4 foot square lift with others, but not go in a many metres (/meters) by many metres pool?

Not all pools use chlorine.

Trend in Pattaya in recent years is about salt water pools.

No idea how Covid-19 reacts with salt water...??

Doh. Salt is used in many pools these days. Always with a salt converter machine to convert salt into? ........ your starter for 10!

Sorry - that was unkind - must be the Covid getting to me.

Salt is converted into chlorine by a special contraption you would find in the pump room.

It has been said many times already; the problem is not the pool itself, but "there are fears that people will congregate or socialize around communal pool areas"

0.1 ppm Free Available Chlorine in a swimming pool guarantees bacteria and viruses are morbid. Your post refers to surfaces, a different situation.

I'm wondering if any of the  geniuses in this administration actually have any data on the number of COVID-19 clusters that have arisen at swimming pools.

makes perfect sense to me.

worried about saliva? Would the pools chemicals like chlorine not kill the risk of that???
