I need to get a Tax ID number for my wife .Too much info on the internet , how do I do it ?

You need to apply for an ITIN for her (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number). I got one for my Thai wife. Now we file a joint return and I get double the deductions.

You need to get a copy of her passport certified by the embassy, then submit that and complete a W-7 and send it to the Texas service center.

 

If you haven't yet filed your 1040 yet, you can file jointly, entering her SSN as 999-99-9998, and submit it along with the W-7

 

Obviously this will require a paper submission, so not sure in these troubled times what ThaiPost EMS is doing to the US right now, but you can still bite the bullet and pay for DHL, Fedex or the like
