webfact
Thailand says it expects coronavirus vaccine next year after tests in mice FILE PHOTO: A woman wearing a face-shield and a mask is pictured in Icon Siam shopping center as shopping centres reopen nation wide during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Bangkok, Thailand May 17, 2020. REUTERS/Soe Zeya Tun BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand expects to have a vaccine for the novel coronavirus ready next year, a senior official said on Wednesday, after finding positive trial results in mice. Thailand will begin testing the mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccine in monkeys next week after successful trials in mice, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, spokesman for the government's Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration. "The Thai vaccine is expected to be used next year,” he said. More than 100 potential vaccines for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, are being developed, including several in clinical trials, but the World Health Organization in April had warned that a vaccine would take at least 12 months. The Thai vaccine is being developed by the National Vaccine Institute, the Department of Medical Science and Chulalongkorn University’s vaccine research centre. Messenger RNA prompts body cells to produce so-called antigens, molecules on the surface of viruses, that spur the immune system into action. Thailand was ranked fifth globally, just ahead of South Korea, for rapid response to and mitigation of the spread of an epidemic in the Johns Hopkins Global Health Security Index report in 2019. U.S. drugmaker Moderna Inc's experimental COVID-19 vaccine, the first to be tested in the United States, produced protective antibodies in a small group of healthy volunteers, according to very early data released by the company on Monday. Drugmakers such as Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer Inc, which is working with Germany's BioNTech SE, are also working to develop vaccines for the novel coronavirus. Thailand, the first country outside China to detect a case of the coronavirus in January, wants to be one of the first to have a vaccine ready for use, Taweesin said. Thailand has reported a total of 3,034 cases of the coronavirus and 56 deaths. webfact
Thai prototype vaccine to be tested on monkeys next week By The Nation Suvit Maesincee, Minister for Science and Technology, revealed progress in the development of a vaccine against Covid-19 yesterday (May 19). Mice injected with a prototype mRNA vaccine at the Chulalongkorn University Vaccine Centre had produced antibody levels as high as 1:3,000, according to preliminary screening results from the University of Pennsylvania. The prototype vaccine would be tested on monkeys next week, said Suvit. Preparations are now underway for manufacture of the vaccine at production facilities in the US and Canada, ahead of human trials. Meanwhile, the research team has joined hands with Thai firm Bionet Asia, which will help manufacture the vaccine after transfer of production technology from the overseas facilities. At this stage, Thailand would be able to produce a Covid-19 vaccine with the newest mRNA technology to help citizens fight the outbreak. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered an urgent acceleration of work on the vaccine, which is being developed by the Chula centre in collaboration with the National Institute of Vaccines and the Department of Medical Sciences. If the research is successful, Thailand will be one of the first countries to have enough vaccines for its citizens. Countries around the world are currently testing Covid-19 prototype vaccines on more than 150 species of animals. Ten vaccine prototypes are already being tested on human volunteers in at least five countries – China, the United States, Britain, Germany and Canada. With Thailand still in the testing on mice stage.....moving to the monkeys stage next week, but some countries already past those preliminary stages and already testing on humans, when the dust settles I expect Thailand will just end up buying rights to produce in Thailand a vaccine developed in another country. 8

'The Flu' is a collection of many viruses. Each year the WHO take a guess at which of the very different strains are going to be circulating in the following 'flu season'. They then spend months producing the vaccines for these specific strains. If they guess wrongly (and they often do) then it simply doesn't work at all. Why don't they continuously manufacture vaccines for all known strains of the flu? I have no idea, but this is how they choose to do it so there must be a reason, probably comes down to money. Inn Between
I am willing to take big money bets that Thailand will not be the first country to develop a Covid-19 vaccine, and I recently saw something saying that a true Covid vaccine has never been successfully developed with the closet thing being the annual flu shots people get. It seems to be a very difficult virus to conquer, responsible for things like common colds and flu. One glimmer of hope may be carrying on where they left off with SARS-2 as the medical community felt they were getting somewhere with that one, but development was apparently stopped because SARS went away. Hopefully, success will be found somewhere before too long, and Thailand is welcome to jump on the bandwagon, insisting that they were THE key player in developing whatever medicine may get the world back to normal -- the old normal before Covid-19. I don't care who lays the biggest claim to success as long as it happens. Edited May 20, 2020 by Inn Between

NB1986
There will be no vaccine... Many scientists say that is impossible to make a vaccine for Coronavirus because of its mutation, but luckily the more virus mutates the less dangerous is... So until "vaccine" will be produced the virus will be not more than just seasonal flu... Is obvious whay they are claiming this look what happened in USA, stocks of Moderna rose up to 20% when they said they have vaccine, while later they said they were wrong no vaccine yet, stocks slashed for 10% also other major stocks in Wall Street went down, i dont have to think twice what is happening on Thai stock market when they put out claims same this... Every single statement you make here is absolutely incorrect, a notable achievment. 1. Many scientists do not say it is 'impossible' to make a vaccine for coronavirus because of its mutation. They understand this and point out that a strategy to design a successful vaccine should take account of possible mutations in the virus, and may be more difficult. 2. The 'more a virus mutates, the less dangerous it is" is absolute nonsense. Many viruses mutate to become more virulent, and more contagious. This is probably how Covid-19 crossed the species barrier in the first place. 3. Moderna do have a vaccine, and never said they did not have a vaccine. The market is a popularity contest and fools buy early in the hope of getting rich. More prudent analysis of the Moderna statement about the vaccine reveals that the results were too preliminary to say whether the vaccine would actually prevent infection, and produce a lasting protection. Every biological scientist in the world knew that from the start, but they are smarter than market analysts. Srikcir
15 hours ago, Bkk Brian said: Because that's better than no vaccine And because recovery is likely a shorter period. That means lower medical costs and term of suffering. While the 2019 flu was only 60% effective in preventing infection, it was conversely effective in minimizing the effects of infection for 40% at risk of infection. Note that influenza has been shown to be highly mutable whereas Covid-19 appears much more stable (only 2 strains thus far with the second a close match to the first), albeit over a relative short 5-month term. You can get a "3-way" single flu vaccine shot that is directed towards 3 common flu mutations.
Popular Post Srikcir
Thailand's next vaccine phase will be with monkeys. Moderns Coronavirus vaccine trial has just been done on 8 healthy volunteers and now plans an 'accelerated' timetable to begin larger (600) human trials soon. Human trials have already begun by Pfizer-BioNTech, and CanSino-AstraZeneca. Thailand's rush for vaccine testing appears to be more about nationalism than about medical science. It might better use government funds to invest in foreign advancements; especially with the ever present culture of corruption in Thai society that has on a national scale little if any checks and balance.

cardinalblue
And it took 50 years last week to have the first negative pressure hospital room in the north... I find that amazing given that Thailand has one of the world’s most TB infected populations...and you wonder w/o proper hospital engineering controls how did they not infect other hospital patients from active hospitalized TB patients? Yet, they are now going to have the world’s first vaccine for this virus? I guess past behavior doesn’t really predict future behavior? Pure propaganda....
