Despite US$5 million offer, Mike Tyson fight unlikely to take place in Thailand

The long line of suitors with very deep pockets who are interested in hosting Mike Tyson’s expected return to the ring, means the eagerly anticipated comeback fight is unlikely to take place in Thailand.

Earlier this month, Australian expat and friend of Mike Tyson, Dean Bourke told Thaivisa of his ambitious plan to host Iron Mike’s comeback fight in Thailand.

Dean had made an official proposal to host the fight to Tyson’s management team in the United States, who were said to be seriously considering the offer.

But this week, Dean said that despite making Tyson an offer of $5 million, it will not be enough to secure the fight on Thai soil.

Dean says Tyson has already received offers of four times what he and his Thailand based backers were able to offer and says he expects Tyson’s presumed return to the ring to take place in the Middle East.

“We put in a bid for Mike Tyson for US$5 million plus first class airfares, accommodation at Mandarin Oriental and a percentage of the pay-per-view”, Dean told Thaivisa by email.

“But we have been told offers from Saudi Arabia in excess of US $20 million plus a share of the pay-per-view have been offered.”

Dean said that with the amount of money being offered, even Tyson’s opponent will stand to make in the region of $10 million.

“Even though the pay-per-view revenue should exceed US $100 million in return - it's tough to compete with this kind of money,” Dean said.

“We tried super hard and put in the best offer we could”, Dean added.

But it’s not all bad news.

Dean, who had been in discussions with Tyson’s representatives about him hosting a TV show in Thailand called FIGHT FOR FAMILY - a Muay Thai reality TV where Thai prisoners fight foreigners (non prisoners) with the winners getting the chance to have their sentence reduced - says that Tyson’s team are still very much interested in being involved in the project and discussions remain ongoing.

The news comes as 53 year old Tyson has been showing off his incredible physique in a series of videos showing him training and looking every bit as ferocious as he did in his pomp.

A trilogy of exhibition fights against former opponent Evander Holyfield - who is 57 years old and also expressed his desire to get back in the ring - has been widely mooted.

While exactly when or where a Tyson comeback fight may take place is yet to be confirmed, one thing for certain is that the former Heavyweight Champion of the World will have no shortage of offers and is set for an astronomical pay day should he get back in the ring.

Mike Tyson has admitted in interviews that he retired because he's ''not good at it'' anymore.

It would be interesting to see though.

Dean cheap charlie.

Iron Mike can make 100 million.

Hey, at least Dean got some publicity.

The IRS will be eager to know what the purse for Mike's next fight will be!

What a ghastly idea, and wrong on every conceivable level. I hope it never succeeds.

What "foreigner" would fight a guy who's fighting to get out of a Thai prison?

Reminds me of Gladiators forced to fight for their lives, in a way.

Its already been done to death, there was a Showtime documentary called Prison fighters 5 rounds to freedom, its been covered in Time, Esquire etc... and there was already a tv show here featuring Thai prisoners vs foreigners. This guy is pretty much a Walter Mitty I think

Tyson is a very entertaining man, he is beloved by hundreds of millions, and anything he does will attract attention. He has changed alot, and has evolved as a man, and I give him alot of credit for that, as most have not. However, I sincerely hope the Saudis do not get this, or any other major event. They need to be shunned, with every nanogram of our beings, on every level possible. The are extremely toxic to the planet, and do not deserve one iota of respect.

You must really hate him, Dean. You want to see a 53-year-old man fight. You must want him to die. All so you can count your money. EVIL.
