LONDON (Reuters) - A local authority in southern England said it would remove a statue of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the worldwide scouting movement, the latest memorial to be taken down in the wake of anti-racism protests sparked by the death of George Floyd.

The demonstrations sweeping across the United States and Europe have reignited a debate about monuments to those involved in Britain’s imperialist past.

Poole council said the statue of Baden-Powell, a British Boer War hero, would be moved from its location on the quay of the seaside town to storage on Thursday while there were discussions with local communities about its future.

“Whilst famed for the creation of the Scouts, we also recognise that there are some aspects of Robert Baden-Powell’s life that are considered less worthy of commemoration,” council leader Vikki Slade said.

Baden-Powell is widely hailed for setting up the scout movement which boasts 54 million members worldwide. In a poll in 2007, he was voted the 13th most influential person in the United Kingdom in the 20th century. But critics say he held racist views and was a supporter of Adolf Hitler and fascism.

His statue, which was erected just over a decade ago, currently looks across the harbour to Brownsea Island where he started the scout movement in 1907.

A spokesman for the Scouts said the organisation was looking forward to discussing the matter with the council “to make an informed decision on what happens next”.

“The Scout movement is resolute in its commitment to inclusion and diversity and members continually reflect and challenge ourselves in how we live our values,” he said.

On Sunday, protesters in Bristol, western England, pulled down a statue of 17th Century slave trader Edward Colston and threw it into the harbour. It was retrieved on Thursday and the local council said it would be displayed in a museum.

Other memorials have also since been removed and councils run by the opposition Labour Party said they would review the “appropriateness of local monuments and statues” on public land.

This kind of mob-driven fascism worked out so well in Kampuchea in the 70s, didn't it?

There is a considerable difference between being a racist & all the good work he did, & Colston being a slave trader.

Lefties are getting their way though.

No doubt, my friend on here who disagrees with almost everything I say, will be along soon to 'put me right'.

He was however quite a talented watercolorist.

The next one in their sights .

They want to remove a statue of a Man because his Father  opposed the idea of abolishing slavery .

The Father was in favour of slavery....................and now they want his sons statue removed

Yup, my predication was correct.

Mountbatten will be next....

Removing the statues is a start, but the Inquisition is quickly going to run out of those...

Time to think about burning some books!

Oh, and while they are at it, why not remove the names of famous criminals given to many public places in the US, such as the J.Edgar Hoover building, or the Dulles International airport?

Calm down, the statue has been removed following police advice.

It’s removal is cautionary and not some plot to undo anybody’s past.

Though I hope Biden-Powell’s past is examined before this statue, which is only a little over ten yes old, is reinstated to its former position.

It's only starting. I've read some tweets on Twitter from BLM members, it's frightening what they are saying and discussing. I think a very strong possibility of summer riots that will dwarf those of the eighties and 2011. Board up your shops and baton down the hatches for a stormy few months

You guessed incorrectly

"Dorset Police said the statue had been identified as "a potential target" and the council was made aware, but added the decision on whether to remove the monument "was not one for the police and no advice was given to remove it".

The police are spineless, they should realise they are making matters worse

Maybe the police could install CTTV and have 24 hour protection, after all that's what the Stephen Lawrence shrine gets at great cost to the taxpayer

There's a statue of Captain Mainwaring who was in Dad's Army, & the C.O. of Clive Dunn.

Because Clive Dunn - in his TV role, talked about "fuzzy wuzzies", the statue needs to go.

Then of course, we have "It ain't half hot mum".....

Oh yes, better go after the script writers too. And their families.

And so did Henry Ford, did n't he ? Better get all those Ford cars off the road.

But he did say "you can have it in any colour you want, as long as it's black"....now it's you can have any statue you like, as long as it's a black.

Glad that you find it funny , I find it  a big concern .

Wanting to "punish" a person because of his Fathers opinion (from 100's years ago) , both who are now deceased is extreme .

   1939 all over again

Nothing unusual there .. Certain members of the Firm held A H on high as did some of the Establishment ..

but where is this all going .? How far down are they going to rake and who is setting the bar for this crusade ..

1. There is no evidence of your claim that anyone wants to punish Baden-Powell because of his father’s support for slavery.

2. Baden-Powell is long dead and beyond punishment.

3. The evidence is the removal is prompted by concerns to protect the statue.

4. It’s not 1939 all over again.

I don’t approve of selecting figures from the past and judging them by the standards of today. You have to leave them in the era that they appeared on this planet, point out their views and actions, and simply leave it at that.

The Spartans used to take on small boys as apprentices and royally <deleted> them ... even so I don’t think we should be banning the movie 300 from the cinema or download websites.
