Laxative - colonoscopy - how to do - Dosage??

Hi, I am hoping of course that Sheryl will see this and be able to help me out a bit....

Monday morning at 09.00 I shall be in Khorat for an colonoscopy.  And for that kind of stuff I wish to be prepared when I get there, to have gone through the procedure with laxative the evening before (tomorrow evening)!!!!

 

I have bought the laxative called;  M M, it says on the bottle that I as an adult shall take 2-3 tablespoons of this laxative. But I do not know if I should repeat that one more time, or if it is just a one time thing!!!!!???

 

If possible plse advise.. Thanks so much...

In the three colonoscopies that I have had, the hospital provided the right laxative and gave me instructions each time.  On each occasion, the effect was almost immediate and was painful cramps and a most impressive result.  It sure cleans you out, as it needs to do,  but I'm not sure, and have never heard, of you having to arrange the clear out yourself. Hope Sheryl gives you advice but if not, more is better I think, as you need to be as clean as the cleanest whistle.

Same for my three at different locations.

 

If you did not receive the perscription and detailed instructions then you have not been talking with the right doctor.  Time to find a new one who knows how to do it.  It is very important that you are clean.  Just grabbing a laxative from a drug store is unlikely to properly prepare you.  If you are not clean, the scope will just take pictures of your <deleted> which will be useless.

The prep they gave me was called Swift and it certainly was. Comes as sachets you mix with a lot of water and glug down, then add more water. Not pleasant but very effective.

As we are Saturday, you could call the hospital in Khorat , or your local hospital , or a  Doctor , or get a Thai person to call your specialist for you.

Thank you so much guys, yes it sounds correct what you all are saying.. My hope was that as I am living in Chaiyaphum some 240 kilometers back and forth, that I could do this thing without having to go there on monday.... and then go back again on tuesday,,, for the actual procedure!!!

 

That is why I bought this M M to clean me out.... The only chance is that if Sheryl could advise name of a laxative I could buy tomorrow, and use tomorrow evening, and hopefully be clean and nice on monday morning in Khorat!!

Dante is correct. I'm lucky enough to never have had one, but I teach English to a surgical oncologist GI Tract specialist and he has explained to me several times that the correct laxative needs to be taken IN FULL the night before because any faecal matter AT ALL that is not expelled will render the examination useless.

it’s not just the laxative and a single dose that one would use for occasional constipation is not the same as prepping for a colonoscopy.   There are also dietary requirements that are laid out in the above link.  If you do it wrong, you’ll have to do it all again.

Be very careful of strong laxatives as what a government hospital gave me prior to operation caused me to pass out trying to walk to bathroom due extreme discomfort immediately after taking and several other patients reported the same experience.  If I had not be caught by family member could have had injury.  Was fine a minute or two later.

The laxative is just the first step. You also need to abstain from seed containing foods such as whole grain breads and tomatoes for at least 3 - 4 days prior.

The bowel preparation consists of drinking about 4 litres ( used to be 8 ) of water mixed with Glycoprep to thoroughly cleanse the bowel. Any pharmacy should have it, although your proctologist should have briefed you fully. Instructions on the Glycoprep pack. Google adverse conditions where you should not take it. Expect 8 - 12 hours of watery bowel motions, drink water or clear electrolyte to offset dehydration.

You can only drink clear liquid before the colonoscopy, depending on whether you have anesthesia.

The hospital gave me 2 small bottles of SWIFF and some laxative tablets. Told me not to eat after 3pm day before and to take laxatives/swiff from 6pm. Drink a litre of water then 2nd bottle of SWIFF. OMG! You don't want to be more than 5 seconds from the toilet. Clean as a whistle next morning! SWIFF can be bought over the counter at pharmacies that stock it (I also got some at Rama 4 in BKK).

Great, I have copied ALl the info in that link, so that I am now fully prepared hopefully. It was great info, with even the names of the meds involved.... Many thanks.

Thank you, IF you would have the name of the other medicin besides SWIFF, than maybe that is what I need, feel a bit familiar for me I must say.... since I did this for 23 years ago in Sweden last time..

Suspect it may have been the Swiff chemical that caused me to feel so nauseous immediately after taking and then fainting after getting up to walk to bathroom (as suspected would vomit).  Believe nurse said it was sodium phosphate and that appears to be what Swiff is.  But this was in hospital so may have been stronger.  That sure did a number on me - but within couple of minutes felt fine.  But as said others who had already had operations said it had the same effect on them.  Doctors and nurses did not seem to even care so suspect it quite common.

Every hospital has its own protocol for this. And they will not budge from that protocol even though you did something on your own first to try to dave time.

 

Some have you take soemthing starting the night before. Some do all of it on the day of the procedure, having you start around 6 AM at home first. Yest others do the whole prep right there i nthe hospital.

 

Are you sure you are scheduled for the actual procedure on Monday? If so surely you were given instructions as to what to do. If not, you may nto be scheduled for the procedure but rather to go in to get the prep.

No I am NOT scheduled at ll. It is my own idea to go to Khorat BKK Hospital and do this colonoscopy due to my intestent problems withpockets and "cherries"....

 

So nothing is set in stone at all... I just wanted to save time and avoid to go back and forth 2 days in a row...

I think you seriously need to rethink all of this. Start again and go and see a specialist, before you try to do anything else.  Sounds like  you have got all the wrong messages in your head. No doctor worth their salt is going to carry out such a procedure to a walk in patient.or someone they haven't properly examined and assessed and if they did, I for one wouldn't trust them an inch. There are risks attached to the procedure.

I have done it in the US but the process may be the same. You have to call a doctor and they will make an appointment for the procedure. The hospital will send you details of what laxatives you shoul buy and how to prepare. As sheryl mentioned, every hospital has their own protocol. I don't think you can clean up yourself by using whatever laxative your friend suggested and then show up for the procedure.

You will almost certainly not be able to get it done tomorrow and quite likely not next week. These have to be scheduled in advance. The room, equipment etc all have to be reserved along with the time slot of the doctor performing it.

 

If you are lucky you will be able to get scheduled and get prep instructions tomorrow.

 

So nothing to be gained by doing a bowel prep yourself now. Just an unnecessarily uncomfortable evening/night.

I had two in the morning same day as an op. One was called Gone in 60 Seconds and the other was called Remnants.

Alright everybody, I have listening to you all. and took it in, and I will just go up to Khorat monday morning without any preparations, and just follows whatever happens..

I was wondering why, if it was planned, the hospital hadn't given you the medication and instructions and you were asking here. Most private hospitals will normally do the procedure within 2-3 days. Book an appointment with the GI consultant and they will explain all to you, issue instructions, prescribe their required medication and book the procedure (this is what happened for me at Bangkok Hospital, BKK). Very professional and courteous and no pain.

Correct. For the 24 hours preceding the colonoscopy, you should not eat any solid foods at all. Only water, broth, fruit juice and Jello (gelatin). You take the Glycoprep early in the evening - like around 18:00. By the next morning before you leave for your procedure, you will have used the toilet quite a number of times and your colon will be prepared.

As he later explained it was nto planned, he does not have the procedure scheduled. He is going to the hospital to request it and thought (incorrectly) that if he did his own bowled prep he could just walk in and get it done on the spot.

 

I believe he is using government hospital. Even with a private one it has to be be booked in advance though wait will be less.

I had the colonoscopy several years ago in Perth,doctor advised mix laxative in a glass of water,take every 2 hours,had 3 doses that afternoon with examination next morning,was ok to drink water and any clear liquids like lemonade to quench hunger pains,doctor who performed the colonoscopy was very impressed with my effort in emptying the system,hope this helps,my doctor prescribed Ducolax which is available over here.

This clearly indicates that your had an appointment for a procedure.  You received responses accordingly.

 

Later you acknowledge that you have no appointment.  So all the prior posts offering help were misinformed, wasted time and effort.

 

Please take your M M, three doses, and at least get somewhat cleared out before any further posting.

Since the OP lives so far away from the hospital, he may wish to consider booking into a hotel the night before the procedure so he doesn't have to drive to the hospital to morning of the procedure after having done his prep.  They may even be willing for him to check into the hospital the day before to do the prep there, under the supervision of nurses, especially if he is elderly.

 

Has he had a colonscopy before and had good feedback on how well he did his prep?  In the U.S. I had three procedures and always received feedback that I hadn't done a good job on prep, even though I followed the instructions to the letter.  With the second and third procedures, I brought this up in advance and they just gave me their standard prep instructions without any modifications.  

 

I guess somepeople just have stubborn colons.  Finally, the doctor at Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai listened about my history with poor prep results and developed a five day plan of diet modification with two days of clear liquids prior to the procedure and extra doses of laxative the night before.  Bingo.  My colonoscopy showed a totally clear result.  I've never been so proud of an internal organ when I watched the video.
