Opposition's oversight of government dented by dissolution of Future Forward

The dissolution of the Future Forward Party has hit the opposition hard, severely undermining its ability to scrutinise the government's performance.

Leader of the ruling coalition, Palang Pracharat Party, is now taking full control of the House of Representatives, especially with the exits of two fierce critics -- former Future Forward members Piyabutr Saengkanokkul and Pongsakorn Rodchompoo.

Piyabutr was chairman of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and Pongsakorn was chairman of the Committee on National Security, Border Affairs, National Strategy, and National Reform.

The move by 10 former Future Forward members to another party has also changed the quota of each committee’s chairperson. Future Forward’s successor Move Forward Party (MFP) can have only four seats but the party must sacrifice seats on two committees of the House in order to regain chairperson positions on the Committee on Justice and Human Rights and the Committee on National Security, Border Affairs, National Strategy, and National Reform.

The MFP does not want to lose the Committee on Justice and Human Rights since it is a means to scrutinise the government and other organisations and there is a possibility that Palang Pracharat will try to snatch it from them by proposing the name of Sira Jenjaka to head the committee.

All eyes also are on the fight of the Thai Liberal Party, which hopes to keep the reins of the House Committee on Corruption under the supervision of party leader Pol Gen Sereepisuth Temeeyaves. Palang Pracharat has proposed government chief whip Wirat Rattanaset to take his place.

Palang Pracharat now has nine chairpersons heading 15 of the committees, putting the opposition in a difficult situation because even though the chair position remains the same, it will be hard to scrutinise the government with only six votes.

This is all part of the ' reforms ' demanded by the anti democracy protests of Suthep and his sheep.

Not a mechanism available under the junta constitution.

Who would have thought?

This should be punishable by jail or even being stoned to death. They were voted in because of FFP and the people supporting that party, not any other party.. Jumping is like spitting directly into 6 million voters faces.

The Military had this plan all the long. The Thai and the thing with the you know who is now famous for is waiting and smiling and then slowly starting the squeezing like a python until there is no more life. In this case they started with rewriting the constitution and smartly courted the PPP to believe that they would be ok and in full control of eating at the troughs by convincing them to support big Fathead who always has walked like a military duck. Duped to the full extent of being ignorant, and now probably have been given scary ultimatums of go with it and be wealthy or face the consequences. Ofcourse this is only a speculative scenario of could be or maybe not?

Thailand is the land of monopolies, why should the government be any different, opposition and democracy is gone... silenced by the uniforms in charge.

And they call this Democeacy? Oh I forgot 'Thai democracy' works differently according to the powers that be. No need for scrutiny, the rulers are 'khon dee'.

There is now no effective opposition to this government. They are free to do as they want...they have the confidence of high authority.

Thailand has entered into a dire period where the military has virtually forced the Thai public into accepting the situation with propaganda disguised as policy.

Protests will be quickly quelled....people are easily charged, jail time is not a threat....activists will continue to disappear.

Yes, that sums it up.  Very sad, I was really hoping for big things from him and Future Forward.

We all knew that the knives would be out but I didn't expect them to be so successful in cutting them down.

A very sad day for Thailand.

If anyone thought the Junta wouldnt do whatever it wanted or took hasnt been paying attention to the last decade. Unlikely to see anything but more of the same cronyism going forward now for at least another decade by which time China will probably own the other two thirds of it,  Oh well C'est la vie.

Yep, the real Thailand has gone. Now they've tasted power, we won't be seeing any serious changes in our lifetime. Only way is for sustained mass protests by the million but Thais are too easy going, non-confrontational and/or apathetic for that to happen wholesale. Thanathorn was a brief ray of light but is far too honourable a man to play these shysters' game and bring the place into line. That it would head in chinese communist party direction is extremely unsettling. One can vote with their feet, not visit and spend money of course, but unfortunately the good Thais will suffer and have to endure 100% chinese. Thailand of 2000 (2010 even) is sorely missed.
