Shocked i was shocked

As i posted last week, after 14 weeks i ventured out, well on saturday, i went out again.

Always have been treated properly by locals, never any anti- farang stuff.

That changed on saturday, went around big C, getting my shopping, got to the checkout, it happened.

As i have a basket in my scooter basket behind me, i am unable to lift it out, usually who ever is on the checkout security does it for me, but he was busy with another customer.

I asked the lady customer behind me to help, she stepped forward to help, girl on the checkout ( never seen her before ) walked round  and put the basket back.

What, she went back to her scanner and just looked at me, security man came over at put the basket on the belt.

I passed my my BIG bag to fill, checkout girl took it off him, walked round and put it on my lap, and said no in English.

Security man and checkout girl had a very tense conversation, he then took my bag, filled it put it behind me, i thanked him, gave him the usual 20 baht.

First time in 3 years of going into big C HAVE I SEEN ANY ANTI- FARANG NONSENSE.

Sorry for your strife.  It could be the check out/cashier person was just having a bad day.

This behavior is wrong and you were treated unfairly.  Hopefully will be the last time this happens.

Am a relative newby, yet have been treated badly a few times here in LOS.  Much more difficult and frustrating for someone who has physical limitations to be sure.

For years I get always helped at Foodland to put my purchases in my bag.

This was done by young helpers, staff, even management.

Lately only sometimes. This at Foodland Pattaya Klang, and now here in Thonglor, where I am for the moment.

IMO it was a problem with the specific person, not a store wide problem. Perhaps she had some reason to be angry with farangs and you were an easy target, or she doesn't like people riding scooters inside. Given you didn't go to the manager at the time we may never know the reason she behaved like that.

Sorry that happened to you Colin. But I couldn't see that her behaviour was specifically anti-farang?

Poor training and not knowing how to cope with a person in a wheelchair, probably. Bad attitude, definitely. A word with the manager would be in order.

My opinion is that ( For Foodland) they let the people working there, decide by themselves if they want to help Farangs or not.

Opposite to before, when anyone working there had to help any customer.

I must be the odd one out, in fact i know i am. Apart from poping into 7/11 and Amazon thats it. Not been in Big C type places in since they first opened here, novelty and all that.. Now Home Pro places i love, can mooch for hours. Can get a tad lonely being left out of BigC T Bags are 5Bht cheaper than Lotus and the never ending "Someone Parked in a Disabled spot" when having a put Thailand Right Session with others ferangs Sunday Lunch time..... Shocked?, Yes, at the endless whinging of Ferangs here. Ive got a wonderful collection of Tap Washers and Electric Plugs from Home Pro, dont feel good walking out with nothing.

Why would i send my wife? Store manager is on very good terms with me, also every other staff member has a;ways been helpful towards me.

This woman i have never seen before, i have always had good / helpful response from all big C staff.

Ive always had a good experience with Foodland on Klang, since the bag ban came into effect I  use a big plastic container that stays in my pickup so at the check out my purchases go from trolly to be scanned and then back into a trolley... shop assistant then pushes trolly to my pickup an places my purchases in the plastic tub.

Yes, that was the usual way. As I wrote, all staff were very helpful.

Well it may come back this way in a near future.

I had one instance in the past month where a checkout girl at Big-C told me she would not fill my bags. All others have done so without issue. I think perhaps there was some discussion from managment about Covid-19 and handling stuff (for example they prefer cashless so less hand to hand transmission risk...supposedley). I was pretty surprised also...but management may have told them it's optional during Covid-19 period.

was she ugly? I think if she wasn't you'd have just let it go

There are muppets in every walk of life Colin. One buffoon working a till is not representative of the vast majority of people.

You should report it though.

Agree.  I feel badly for the OP, but this could hardly be classified as an anti-farang episode.  Too often we jump to conclusions and some farangs in Thailand want to immediately label an unpleasant experience as anti-farang when that may not be the case at all.  Honestly, if this woman harbors some sort of resentment towards handicap people, I would find that much more reprehensible.

Manager in big C here has always got her staff to help me, i want chicken/ pork, who ever is on the scales there always helps me.

As i am stuck on my scooter, strapped on it ( if not i can easily fall off, no balance) it is very difficult to reach top/ bottom shelves, staff always step forward to help, many without being asked.

Maybe for others staff have been told not to help, but in my case they have been told help him.

Checkout staff put things on the shelf ready to be bagged up, i cannot reach the groceries, somebody has got to do it for me.

It seems like you should hire or get someone to help you. Helping someone who is handicapped is nice but shouldn't be expected. IMO expecting store staff to provide extra assistance is like asking for entitlement. It's nice when they do but shouldn't be expected.

what did the security guy say to the girl ? you may be making assumptions this had anything to do with you being a farang.

Hi Colin; Try to forget this matter, it is not worth any "ink" to talk about she.  You know well and must to be realistic, IMO the anti-Falang sentiment is there, sometimes visible, another ones hidden...

Just; ignore it.

It is not due, it is a service rendered.
No controversy, the physically and mentally handicapped world, I
know perfectly.
Whatever the reasons for this cashier, I hope she is not unemployed today, following the intervention of Colin.
