Army changes recruitment drive dates after losing budget due to Covid-19 fight

The Thai army has changed the dates of its annual recruitment drive that had been rescheduled to 27 days in July and August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It will now be held on 17 days between July 23rd and August 9th (the 28th being a public holiday).

This is due to budget cuts as the army helped the government in the fight against the virus.

By more than trebling the number of applicants that will be processed in one day and having pre-registration the army hopes to save 50%.

Naew Na said that there would be no compromise on regulations to stop the spread of Covid-19.

During the height of the pandemic applicants did not need to have urine tests for drugs but this is now being reviewed in proposals to be decided upon by the Ministry of the Interior.

Part of the drive that is always followed closely by the media is the drawing of straws for conscription. The media had to go without their stories and pictures of rejected ladyboys back in April, notes Thaivisa.

I initially thought it meant 'losing budget' meant the recruitment budget had been reduced. No such luck with 1,600 generals lawns' to mow.

I'm sure they'll be coming soon.

Why do they need to recruit?

Because no-one would ever volunteer, it's not like you get trained in anything. !

350,000 men and 1400 Generals Why?

Good question. I will no doubt be corrected here if I'm wrong but a General would normally command a division which would normally consist of battalions and brigades together numbering from 10,000 - 15,000 troops. So, 350,000 men would probably take around 23 - 35 Generals. There would also be home office, attache' positions and general (pun intended) hangers on. It has been a while so, anyone that has any more accurate info please step in.

I stand corrected thanks to Wikipedia;

As of 2020, the Royal Thai Armed Forces number 360,850 active duty and 200,000 reserve personnel,[14]nearly one percent of Thailand's population of 70 million. This percentage is higher than that of the US, but lower than that of nearby Vietnam.[15]:5[16] The Thai military has more than 1,700 flag officers (generals and admirals), roughly one general for every 212 troops, a bloated number for a military of its size.[17][18] By comparison, the US military as of 1 November 2018 had 920 active duty general and flag officers (GFOs) for a force of 1,317,325 personnel, or 0.07% of the total force.[19]:2,5 On 2 May 2015 1,043 new Thai flag officers of all three services promoted in 2014–2015 took the oath of allegiance.[20] [11]

Quote from Wikipedia:-

The Thai military has more than 1,700 flag officers (generals and admirals), roughly one general for every 212 troops, a bloated number for a military of its size.

Compare with the USA military:-

231

The total number of active duty general officers is capped at 231 for the Army, 62 for the Marine Corps, 198 for the Air Force, and 162 for the Navy.

Why do they need to recruit?, Oh yeah, I forgot and they need more conscripted gardeners, houseboys, and personal assistants.

For national securitay, don't yeh know.

Thailand could be invaded at any time. They need to be ready. I would imagine all jeeps, tanks, HumV's and jets would all be left in reverse gear, just in case. ????
