U.S. sues ex-Trump adviser Bolton to block book publication

(Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday sued former national security adviser John Bolton, seeking to block him from publishing a book about his time in the White House that it said contained classified information and would compromise national security.

The civil lawsuit came one day after U.S. President Donald Trump said Bolton would be breaking the law if the book were published.

The White House National Security Council (NSC) "has determined that the manuscript in its present form contains certain passages - some up to several paragraphs in length - that contain classified national security information," the lawsuit said.

Publication of the book "would cause irreparable harm, because the disclosure of instances of classified information in the manuscript reasonably could be expected to cause serious damage, or exceptionally grave damage, to the national security of the United States," according to the lawsuit.

Trump fired Bolton last September after roughly 17 months as national security adviser.

Trump said on Monday that Bolton knows he has classified information in his book, and that he had not completed a clearing process required for any book written by former government officials who had access to sensitive information.

[NFA] The United States on Tuesday sued former national security advisor John Bolton, seeking to block him from publishing a book about his time in the White House that it said contained classified information and would compromise national security. Gavino Garay has more.

Attorney General William Barr said the Justice Department was trying to get Bolton to complete the clearance process and "make the necessary deletions of classified information."

Bolton's lawyer Charles Cooper said they were reviewing the lawsuit and "will respond in due course."

"The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir" is set to be published on June 23.

Publisher Simon and Schuster said the lawsuit is an attempt by the Trump administration to stop "publication of a book it deems unflattering to the President." It said Bolton has fully cooperated with the NSC pre-publication review.

The book provides an insider account of Trump's "inconsistent, scattershot decision-making process," the publisher has said.

Double Trouble

John Bolton's book, will be followed by Mary Trump's, Donalds niece. By now we know the plot, but they delve deeper; Boltons into incompetence, personal benefit, and US foreign relations/policy. Mary's a more personal work on how he manipulated his tax returns, to profit from bankruptcy after bankruptcy of business ventures.

BTW the book is printed, already shipped so it is coming out. No way POTUS can stop it. What it is does show is Ukraine style malfeasance around the world. Giving aid if he, POTUS gets aid or info, against his enemies; quid pro quo .  All from a hard line, ex Bush.jr., Republican, clearly fed up with the current regime.

As I find myself staying home this rainy season, both look to be required reading.

June 23rd, date to watch for book release. Timing about right for marketing blitz or the book will be redundant after November.

If the information you feel is sensitive is that you are an arrogant narcissist who is happy to divide the country in order to be re-elected trump, it's not a secret.

I think he is worried about the "White House" reality show ratings! He needs to get a Kardashian on board!

Personally I don’t care Bolton was asked to testify for the good of the country he chose for the good of his bank account we allready know what trump is but I guess it’s good to get more evidence of trumps incompetence

I really, really hate it when someone says something about me that is unflattering and when someone does not display total fealty, which is what I expect and demand of my subjects! And I am always embarrassed when the truth emerges. Truth must be stopped at all costs, and truth is the enemy!

Both of these books, as well as Fire and Fury, represent a great service to the American people. I lived in NYC during the 1980's, and was in commercial real estate, so I met many people who knew Trump, and had direct dealings with him. They are said the same things about him, and none of them were complimentary! So, I have known who he is for a long time. Some are just finding out now.

No worries. He will be absolutely crushed in November, and will be ushered out of DC in a humiliating fashion, to a declining empire. It is my guess, that he will NEVER sign another management deal in his life again, and his name will remain utterly radioactive. As of several months ago, prior to Covid, and with a booming economy, it was very difficult to sell, or lease anything in any of the buildings that have his name on them. After he is dismissed as president? See ya, but I wouldn't want to be ya!

It is quite possible his niece might be called as a character witness during one of his upcoming trials, for felony fraud.

What America really needs now, during a time of crisis, is real leadership. The utter opposite of what this tone deaf, completely out of touch man is providing.

Reality show, yep it's just a continuation of the apprentice. The owner of the show, the scriptwriter/controller of the scripts and the owner of the 'our fired' line just moved location. Nothing more, nothing less. And it retains, as planned, the ability for the show owner to gain attention, continue the 'look at me' genre, and say whatever he likes because nobody is allowed to object/comment on what the show owner says.

Meanwhile urgent critical matters are ignored.

Bolton is a complete weasel but I"d be interested to know what he has to say.

Not lining his pockets though so somebody point me to a review when the time comes.

Will these books, or any books, or any information, convince Trump voters that they should not vote for him?

After more than 3 years it should be obviously to everyone that Trump is an incompetent, racist divider who does not work in the interest of most Americans. It's should be obvious for everybody.

But there are still many many millions who still support him. Even if Bolton would expose 10 more Ukraine like transactions including all the evidence, would any of those voters care or even listen?

And is there anything his niece could possible expose which would convince his supporters that they should not support Donald anymore? I have my doubts.

Obviously all the facts should be exposed. But intelligent and informed people really don't need any more information to be able to decide if Trump is a good president or not. It is obvious - since years!

The book publisher was quoted how happy they were the book was getting so much attention. It will really help sales.

Frankly, I hope he takes a huge financial loss from being sued over the book. He is a traitor for remaining silent during the impeachment hearings out of pure greed.

Well yeah but that's water under the bridge.

I still want the book out there.

They call themselves politicians.....

Banning a book in America, where free speech is supposed to be sacred,

and using the old coverall of National Security , pathetic.

The majority of reasonable people can see through this and know its

all about protecting and saving Trump.

Incompetence - he managed to get himself elected POTUS after a dubious business career, a TV show, and when all those supposedly knowledgeable ones said he had no chance!

Hows that stack up for incompetence against a career politician, ex first lady, ex Secretary of State, who all the knowledgeable ones said couldn't loose screwing it up?

Looks like this November it will be about the least incompetent rather than most competent again!
