Boxed wine? Sacre bleu!

All of the cheap plonk exported from Australia to the uk comes over in a container

which is effectively a 40 foot wine box, it is then transferred to a local bottling plant

and naturally bottled and labeled.

Interesting story huh, still doesn't explain the disappearance of the 5 litre boxes!

  • first they came for the boxed wine....

  • It is more likely to be that they have simply run out of stock. COVID-19 has put the brakes on all imported products.

They fiddle with the size to let the price look unchanged.

A common marketing trick not only in Thailand.

Big beer bottles: don't rejoice too soon.

They look unchanged but also over the years amount has been reduced.

(680->630 or so)

Different brands can have slightly different amount.

About the 5 liter boxes: I could bet they vanished long ago and it was a topic here.

See some from 2018.

Not quite.

I was buying just before the "lockdown".

5 litres of "Gossip" white wine cost 969 Baht at Big C. Whereas 3 litres of the same wine cost 999 Baht!!!!!

I thought about that but even before Covid-19 the stocks of 5 litre boxes were disappearing.

Don't think so...there haven't been any decent boxed wines available for years...I don't count that fruit juice stuff.

haha I didn't say decent wine.

I know the box stuff is not the best, but there are one or two brands that are drinkable when chilled.

With reasonable tasting wine here costing around 1500 Baht a bottle, then I am able to drink a glass of plonk once in a while.

Last time I went home (10 years ago now) I bought 6 bottles of reasonable wine on offer for 600 Baht. I miss those prices.

Maybe it's specific for certain shops/supermarkets.

As I gave up drinking (wine) since long I have lost track.

There used to be a few quaffable boxed wines available in Thailand but a long time ago. Now all I see is regurgitated fruit juice.

But there are some reasonable bottled wines for much less than 1500 Baht, especially some of the Chilean ones.

Before they rejigged the tax rates, years ago, I could get a bottle of Moet for B400! That was the best time to be here.
