Thai police use STEAMROLLER to crush hundreds of noisy exhausts

Lt Gen Chatree Preechakun was guest of honor at Muang police station in Roi-Et in Thailand's north east yesterday.

He was there to witness the crushing of hundreds of illegal motorcycle exhausts and other parts.

There was a big crackdown on illegal street racers from June 20th to 30th.

A total of 355 vehicles were seized.

Lt Gen Chatree called on everyone to follow the law whether they be the riders themselves, parents or repair and detailing shops.

Following the easing of curfew restrictions in Thailand the annoying street racers have been making a resurgence, reported Ban Muang.

Representatives of 33 police stations in Roi-Et attended the crushing ceremony yesterday.

Many aggrieved residents would like to see the bikes themselves crushed. These are confiscated and only returned to their owners when they are fit and legal for the road.

And as some of us posted in similar article not long ago, it would be a good idea to throw some of the bikes as well under the steam roller just to send a message...

Seems like a problem that can be resolved from within the community. Do you really need police for this?

How can it be resolved from within.

I am happy they crush noisy exhausts, they should keep doing it and those exhausts that are illigal should not be allowed to sell.

The exhaust pipe is just part of the problem. These kids will race anything. Loud pipes rarely improve performance unless other modifications are also made. But they do sound faster. And if these kids have exhaust pipes removed and confiscated (and crushed) when they ride their bikes home with no pipe at all it will make even more noise. Finally, the pipes aren't that expensive, so they can just get replacements.

Solving the problem from within the community won't work because these lads have already grown to an age when they choose who to respect, follow and listen to.

Strict enforcement won't work or last long.

The problem is that there's no fear of losing a licence, getting points on it, or having a bad driving record. Back in the UK it was/is super serious to have any bad driving record, be that accident claims, points or whatever. It screws up insurance costs for years to come.

A solution is hard to find, and the police don't really help do they?

In the Philippines they crush luxury cars etc LOL

God, I wish they would do this in my town. Impound the bikes and crush them as well. Pig ignorant people riding round on crappy Honda Waves with a straight through exhaust sounding like an F16 taking off at midnight. 40 or 50 of the buggers. We have asked the police about it. I even offered to pay the wages of the police for a road block from 10pm till 12pm. They are considering it.

Disappointed - not a STEAMroller at all!

They don't "crush luxury cars" in the Philippines if they are legitimate.  Illegally imported cars are crushed, though.

Why the big show? "Hundreds" of noisy exhaust pipes is not even a drop in the bucket.

It's not a steam roller. Fairly easy to tell as it doesn't have a steam engine.

That is a road roller.

Should have been still attached to the motorbikes, and allowed the motorcycle riders drive the roller.

The bikes were seized right, for How long. Then given back to the Owners/Riders.

Road Roller the pipes isn't going to stop this .

If they were Really Serious they would  Fine the Riders Ones and put them on Notice to Change the pipes .

If they Don't Change the pipes back to Factory ones in a Given period of time (say 1 week) confiscate the bikes and  Crush them . Works 100% , than they haven't got a bike .

They are crushing luxury cars. I didn't say anything about the reason why they crushed them. It was just an amusing aside without getting into the reasons why they do such things in the Philippines.

Steamroller is a generic term for the machine in the U.S.

Actually a crackdown that lasted more than 24 hours, well done the Thai authorities, but next time

crush the bikes, not just the exhausts.

Time for the police or rather the local police chiefs to get their men to do their duty. To see uniformed police sitting in gold shops all day, playing with their i-phones, doesn't give much hope for better law enforcement . Motorcyclists seeing a police check point ahead will do a quick u-turn.  Heavily mirrored dumper trucks with thunderous dustbin sized exhausts and a windscreen offering a letterbox view of the road, are waived through after a quick licence check. Pickups with boy racer exhausts and licence plates sprayed with white paint are also waived through. Perhaps the local Police chiefs who attend the monthly , heavily uniformed, village headmen meetings should demand that they tell the villagers, in their morning Tannoy message , that anyone caught with an illegal exhaust will have their bikes crushed . ..... dream on !!

But it wasn't amusing.

A fine of 10000 baht will help, first time. Second time 20000 baht and so on. Not paying means jail time.
