I have a friend, a Brit monk who's lived at Wat Paknam for about 20 years.  Next time I talk to him I'll ask him about this statue.

I wasn't there, but as far as I know, The Buddha never asked for anything, food, money, medicine, clothes, lodging, transportation, nothing.  During his later years, some wealthy followers built places along the way he and his students traveled, for them to stay during the rainy periods.  From what I read, those rainy seasons in India were horrendous.  And as you can imagine, those temporary buildings turned into temples.  If you read the many stories of Buddha, he himself preferred staying out in the forests.
