I need to buy another truck, my old faithfull 4 x 4 Toyota Tiger 3.0L Hilux has been totalled by my idiot son. The motor had done 250K with no real issues, it was made in 2001 so it has done me for nearly 20 years.

I need a reliable Diesel pick up, just a 2 door with the bench seats in the back, I do not necessarily need a 4 x 4 again but I am still drawn to them.

If you had around 250-350K to spend, which would you choose as regards models from either Toyota or Isuzu? I am not interested in any of the other makes other than maybe just a little bit with the Nissan trucks. The diesel engines have progressed so much since my old Toyota that I really have no idea what to expect. (Currently 1.9L Diesels seem to leave my old 3 litre standing, so obviously technology has moved on considerably.

Age is not a great issue except I would like to try to keep it under 10 years and probably under the 200,000Km on the clock.

So, of you had to put forward a model that gave the most power, good top speed (Not interested in emissions, it could burn coal as far as I am concerned) but with excellent reliability, between the two brands which models are worth a look?

Cheers.

Toyota Hilux.

For that kind of money you will get year 2015, under 100 000 Km, in diesel. I wouldn't go for a 4x4 and 2.5 should be enough for normal driving around.

Thanks, you have cheered me up, some of the junk is so overpriced here it is unbelievable. If I was getting s reliable motor with under 100K that would do me fine. Do you know what the different variants of the Hilux currently are? Last one I saw was when they introduced the D4D, but which is the best engine variant for the Hilux Diesel? Any tips on the model name to look for? Like I say, I just need the pick up with 2 doors and a rear bench seat.

Much appreciated!

There is no doubt that Toyota has built in reliability, I would stick with Toyota.

The Vigo engine (2004-2015) has a cam belt, must be replaced at 150kkm, keep that in mind when looking for a truck, there is a dash warning light that comes on at 150kkm.

The 2015-on Revo does not have a cam belt.
