What about the Ubon office?

It is 30 days.

But I got grubled at for doing it 12 days early last year. I have not bothered doing it very early since the 30 day under consideration doesn't start until the day your curren permit to stay ends.

There is little advantage to doing it early, as the 400,000 cash has to be left until the under consideration period has expired, for KhonKaen immigration

I was also upset the under consideration did not start until my current permit expired

Doing it early gets it done and dusted. Good for your stress levels.

I recall a report where fella needed to do it early. He attended imm office explained his situation and was successful. Your imm office is 30 days thinking you may be able to ask for 45. As usual depends on io and attitude on the day

I was hoping that I could get it a bit earlier as I want to travel - is this not possible at all?

They will always start the under consideration period from the day your current permit to stay ends. That is a Division 4 policy and they will be the ones approving your application.

You can travel within the country if you want to.

Under normal circumstances you could get re-entry permit that would allow you enter the country up to the report back date. But now you probably would not be able to enter the country for a long time if you left.
