The water level in Mekong River flowing through Nong Khai province has risen sharply due to heavy rain in the North of Thailand and Laos under the influence of tropical storm Sinlaku.

The water level had risen to 4.20 metres as measured by Nong Khai's Department of Water Resources, rising sharply from Monday's level by 76 centimetres. The level could increase by more than one metre by Wednesday as the Chiang Khan water station in Loei province has measured increase in water by 1.70 metres, which is expected to flow to Nong Khai province within 18-20 hours.

Mekong water levels have tended to rise and fall suddenly, which has directly impacted fish farmers in Nong Khai province as large fish develop sickness and die when the water flow is rapid.
