Pattaya: Rebranded "24 hour Walking Street" opens its arms to Thais - and one way traffic!

Pattaya's famed Walking Street is completely rebranding itself after the devastation of the coronavirus pandemic.

There are no foreign tourists at all so the street is trying to appeal to Thais by going 24 hours and offering street food.

And it will also be open from now on to traffic and parking. Though it is one way only to avoid accidents.

Manager reported that Walking Street was opening its arms to Thais. Following a well received trial period the street would be open all day, not just the previous 7 pm to 4 am.

This was to encourage Thai tourism, they said.

After a crisis meeting with local operators, mayor Sontaya Khunpluem said it was obvious that the country was not open and there were no foreign tourists. So Thais need to be the new normal for Walking Street.

There are plans to promote street food and street food events to encourage domestic tourists. He said he would be liaising with the culture and tourism ministries to promote various events.

Premrudee Saekhow who fronts an association of north easterners said they would be putting on some special food and drinks parties for Loy Krathong.

Meanwhile the We Love Pattaya site reported that deputy mayor Ronnakit Ekkasingh, police and local dignitaries and tourists took part in a ceremony last night at 7pm to open the street to traffic and parking.

He stressed that it would be one way only to avoid accidents.

Welcome to a road you can buy food on.   Brilliant. I think this idea may take off.

Another way would be to turn it into a pedestrian only street.....they could call it......let me think?

  • Ridiculous to allow cars after dark...when will be the first accident...cobbled street + rain + an impatient somchai in his street racer

Thanks for the jokes, it's been a bad morning so far and was in need of some proper amusement.

So not "Walking Street" anymore...."Just Another Street"..........pure (Thai) genius.

Walking street + cars.  So 'a street'.

Street food is the draw?

But there will traffic and parking in the street.  The side walks are very small. so where will these proposed venders set up shop?  With no gogo or bars open for westerners there will be no lights/signs so just as well open in the daylight.

Truly amazing Thailand.....

Walking Street will be renamed Drive Thru Street

Thais are generally not enthusiastic walkers and will happily park right in front of the food vendor, never mind who is waiting behind.

Expect massive traffic jams on weekends...

Only one way to avoid accidents and we all know what that is

I went there last night, it was like a ghost town, quite scary. Would make a good set for an apocolyse movie. Won't be going back anytime soon, especially to get run over.

Remember the bad old days when they were banning street food because they wanted nice pavements?

Desperation writ large

The name change mainly due to it driving the pedestrians crazy who might try walking along it.

Walking street was all about agogos. Will the Thai males visit any and pay 5000 for a sex with the Isaan ‘beauties’? And those 200 baht lady drinks? Will they like the concept?

Maybe they could sell it along the same lines as the wildlife safari park, just drive through slowly observing all the various species that can be found in their natural habitat. The Thai's love a rubber neck.

This street ain't Walking anymore, it will become Jamming Street.

No , Gawking Street more like.

"Mommy, why those ladies not wearing clothes?"

Is this like the way NYC re-imaged Times Square?

Street stalls selling all kinds of tot will be next and that will surely be the kiss of death,  just like what happened to Pat Pong............

Why are so many Thai Officials so steeped in racialism........Street being organised for Thais.  If they advertised the Street for Thai Food and gifts and welcomed all comers, there would be a lot more takers for the event.  Ex-pats and many Foreign Visitors come to Thailand for the Thai experience.  Stop the "me, me, me" thought process and try to think outside the box........well a little bit anyway!

The average driver here cannot follow the direction of flow of traffic on a highway, what makes them think this will be a one way only street.........I hate to imagine the bedlam this is going to cause.

  • Popular Post

many more streets in Pattaya should be pedestrian only, this idea is going the wrong direction
