Popular Post Scaliwags66
I am an American and used to seeing lots of fat people everywhere. Ridiculous how the food industry works there, portion size, and <deleted> in general. I first was in Thailand in 2012 then moved away until last year and now back again. I can not help to notice it seems Thailand is just getting fatter. I know US food industry is to blame in a lot of ways sending all their <deleted>ty products globally for the constant desire to grow corporate profits. But also Thais love a good bubble tea, iced coffee, cakes, sweets, etc etc. I read recently that now Thailand is in the top 10 countries for percentage of population increase in obesity. I guess it is not surprising how many overweight people I am seeing these days. Any of you long term residents here noticed a trending towards this over your many years in the country? Or more recent phenomenon? If the younger generation is used to all the packaged 711 products and sweets and chips then it will only get worse I guess. Seems like the older people are not as fat as maybe they stick to a more traditional diet? Just thinking out loud here. Sorry if worthless post lol.

Popular Post 2 is 1
Thai's eat all the time! They don't even know what is breakfast! Have to put 1 kilogram rice in mouth whit some else. And need sweed after. Our girl (wife's) is fat and her cousin is elephant, weight 120 kilogram. I don't want to go shop whit them , coz cost 3000 bth only snacks "jesus". Wife give girl 500 bth/week to eat in school. Even eat breakfast and dinner in home. Wife take care of elephant coz her real mother is looser and only drink lao khao ! Ask all the time money(she is in Khon Kaen univercity). I have said to wife that elephant eat you to bankruptcy! Story of normal Thailand lol 1 1
Popular Post SteveK
They eat a lot and regularly. And as time has gone on, because of western influences like fast foods, high calorie coffee drinks, cakes and donuts, as you mentioned some Thais are eating less healthily. And fewer are doing manual labour or even walking. Jesus, Thais hate walking more than 50 yards! More calories in and fewer calories out equals a fatter populace. There are some huge women in my wife's family. But definitely the trend is towards getting fatter, a lifelong Japanese friend tells me it's the same there too. Asian metabolism can't handle a 1500 calories double cheeseburger, fries and a drink so the inevitable will happen. The young uns ain't even up yet, and when they do get up, they sit in the hammock looking at Tik Tok. When they decide to go out, they jump on their Honda Wave, the youngsters do no exercise. And they are the ones who like the 700 calorie Starbucks drinks, or a KFC bucket. Edited August 16, 2020 by SteveK
Popular Post bkk6060
Those very popular 1000 calorie plus "coffee drinks" sold on the streets with the Carnation milk cans on the cart, or all the coffee shops that sell them. Thais seem to actually believe this milk and coffee is not so bad. A quick pick me up. That condensed milk is mostly sugar one ounce has 130 calories and 22 carbs. Then watch as they add what looks like water but is mostly heavy sugar syrup. A small shot of coffee is the only thing fatless. I have been with Thais that will drink 2 or 3 or more of these a day no problem. Walking around jacking a straw in and out and shaking the plastic cup. Annoys me. ???? Add the cheap noodle and rice meals they buy you got a carbo load creating fat and more diabetes. I do not see that many Thais in McDonald's, but they seem to love KFC and donuts. Krispy Kreme I think is pretty new here they are mostly packed in the malls people buying 2 or 3 donuts. So yes, this place is getting fatter especially the younger generation. from the home of CC
lol, I guess you forget what going to Walmart is like, if the Thais were cannibals a Sat. nite there could feed the country for a year. How many people in America are obese? Over 70 million adults in U.S. are obese (35 million men and 35 million women). 99 million are overweight (45 million women and 54 million men). NHANES 2016 statistics showed that about 39.6% of American adults were obese. Edited August 16, 2020 by from the home of CC

Popular Post SteveK
When I was young, I'm sure I ate just as much garbage as the kids these days, I seem to remember spending my pocket money on giant pouches of maltesers and big cans of Tango. But when I had free time with my friends, we would always be out and about on our bicycles and being active. I used to cycle for miles with the kids in my neighbourhood looking for the best fishing spots. Now it's just all about mobile phone apps. I used to walk to school everyday, took me 40 minutes each way. Imagine asking a child to do that now! They'd want an Uber. Dumbastheycome
I recall reading that on the obesity scale Thailand has achieved Number 2 slot after the USA. More amazing that New Zealand was number 3 ! I always thought the British would be way up there because eat so much fat <deleted> ! But my wife is also a bit shocked about the big people to be seen in Bangkok now and oozing outwards into Thailand in general. 1 1

Thailand is way down the list, by country. I did read that it was 2nd behind Malaysia in ASEAN. Maybe you confused it with that. Even BFA (Big Fat America) isn't actually top of the list. Popular Post impulse
What astounds me about the USA, where I'm stuck by Covid, isn't the sheer weight. It's the distribution. I see some folks with pretty normal upper bodies and huge butts/hips that look like they couldn't possibly be on the same body. That's got to be some kind of insidious food chemical thing, because there is no way to get that out of proportion just by eating too many calories and not exercising. Some day, there's going to be a rash of whistleblowers from the food industry coming out with revelations that they've known all along that they're killing their customers. BTW, about Nauru... Its population is around 12,000. I can show you apartment complexes in the USA where the 5,000 residents weight more than all the people of Nauru combined. Especially if you could just weigh their butts. Edited August 16, 2020 by impulse 3

I ate loads of sugar and bad food when young, but didn't put on weight because active. Now kids don't do much except exercise their texting finger. However, we ate less processed food then, and processed food is full of sugar and very bad chemicals. More bad chemicals used to grow food now than then, too.

NHANES 2016 statistics showed that about 39.6% of American adults were obese. Exactly the point of the post. The American, and other western, (with japan included) way of life is introduced everywhere, including most of what Thais own. Cars, trucks, scooters, computers, phones, tractors, appliances, military equipment and guns, and food. The food, mostly sweet things, is the main reason they are getting bigger here. Simple carbs like sugar have to be burned off before the body can burn stored body fat, and like all other kids in the world, they start early, giving the kids snacks instead of healthy food. In America, the diet knowledge is far more than here, but the obesity rate is very high because people love sweets and the companies know this. Before I came here, I saw Thais, and Asians, as a lean race, with a few exceptions. Now everywhere i look I see more and more people with weight problems. Here in Isaan, you would think that since they are subsistence farmers for the most part, most would be lean because farm work, especially in the heat all day, tends to keep you lean. But when you snack during the day on junk, then go home and eat a pound of rice, your body will grow.

In women, it's stored there because of hormones, and helps during pregnancy and lactation.

People are fat everywhere, and all for the same reasons. You and your family are considered skinny, even without knowing your heights. And this is with drinking a litre of Pepsi every day. It's not the diet making people fat, it's the lack of exercise. Nobody exercises any more, children just sit in front of the TV.
