Just how big is a general's garden, for them all to cut the grass - their main occupation surely?

For 1,600 generals that's 25 'volunteers' per general's garden.

Your estimation of the number of generals seems a conservative one.

Although the exact numbers are classified...there are probably hundreds (thousands?) more than that.. Remember, Generals don't actually retire....they just stay at home while receiving full pay and benefits forever. But but that's not to say there won't be enough slaves to go around....

There are more than enough dirty, demeaning jobs to keep tens of thousands of lo-so domestic servants busy.

You're right, I'm just too conservative for my own good.

On 3 September 2018, the newspaper we can't quote said there are 1,700 generals and admirals.

Or do you have a different figure?

I think it's a good thing, if Australia adopted such measures years ago it wouldn't have the drugs, ice rampant and delinquent youth prevalent in todays society. All young folk know right from wrong and taking drugs is wrong as todays youth clearly shows.

The army teaches respect and social discipline, also working at schools and cleaning the environment.

Should be compulsory in many troubled countries. imo

This is hardly news!  There is a big shortage of jobs in Thailand due to the lack of Tourists, so those who would normally work in the hospitality business have joined the armed forces to have somewhere to sleep, eat and socialise, plus receive a salary, albeit quite a small salary!

Is that 40,000 volunteers doing 6 months?

It's either do a 6 month stint or take a chance of doing nothing or 2 years... no brainer.

I would have though the  WuFlu lockdown and resulting economic disaster has had a huge impact

at least enrolling  with the men in green will provide shelter and food during the  military "training"

Military training???? You mean learning how to run a country for future coups. :cheesy:

Of course drugs, ice, delinquency and crime don't exist amongst the youth of Thailand!

Or the 1 day per week CCF-type affair associated with schools/colleges which gains an exemption from being drafted at 21.
