Because bank letter is just a snapshot of latest balance; and if passbook is not updated regularly, a passbook entry may be an amalgamation of several actions, one or more of which may be a dip below the required 800/400 baht balance. Thus, the required printout of all past 12 month activity, precluding any amalgamation of data.

Simple show up with an updated bankbook. How hard is it to go to a passbook machine once a month and update. I do and it takes about a minute to do it.

Good for you. This might work in several provinces. In Chiang Mai, however, my agent required I get a 12-month bank activity statement, because Chiang Mai Immigration has shown they want such a letter, regardless of how up-to-date and amalgamation free one's passbook is. And, even if Imm said, "Oh, you update every month, that's just fine," my passbook leaves the drawer once a year, when I renew my extension. Getting a bank letter is certainly easier than going to the bank to update my passbook, when I don't have to, since the wife gets our necessary cash from our joint account.

Yes, the letter seems silly, when, with no activity in the account during the year, photos of my passbook page should suffice. However, Immigration (some, anyway) apparently believe it's easier not to have exceptions. And, I believe, they're probably right, at least from the easier point of view for them.

Getting that letter ain't a big deal...and it may save you a repeat trip to Imm, should you encounter a 'by the book' IO.

Each to their own. I know a guy still goes into a shop to pay his phone bills. Its more for the getting out and about for him more than any practical reason. Personally I never go near a bank most of the year with today's online and cash free lifestyle, especially during the pandemic.

I should add this still works at CW for my friend. The IO doesn't accept it for me. It depends how often the bank book has entries I think. Mine would have too many.
