BANGKOK(NNT) - To mitigate flooding during this rainy season, the government has put in place several projects on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River to improve drainage capacity, including canal dredging. Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan visited San Saeb canal, where he said renovation work must be completed within the timeframe.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan said the government has been working to improve San Saeb canal in all respects, from environmental management to water quality improvement, in order to ensure the safety of people travelling by boats on the canal, while improving water drainage capacity on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has been tasked to proceed with the renovation of San Saeb canal, along with the removal of sediment and intrusive buildings. The BMA also works with the Royal Irrigation Department in managing the opening and closing of water gates that connect San Saeb canal with other canals.

Gen Prawit said water quality in the canal must be improved, making it free of unpleasant odors. He has urged responsible agencies to reach an understanding with all parties involved in canal restoration.

The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) is responsible for a number of the projects in Bangkok, such as the construction of canal walls, and a large scale waste water treatment project covering San Saeb and peripheral canals, which are part of the 20-year water resources master plan.
