Sale of alcoholic beverages to be banned via electronic channels

Featured Replies

I am so glad that Thailand is on lock down and that no International tourists will

be affected.  Sorry for the expats and trapped people, as well as the local

Thais who do enjoy the evil alcohol though.   Thank gosh for the Mom and Pop businesses

that I have shopped at so many times in the past, may they always be around.

On my trips to see my wife in Bangkok

I  have noticed  that  the possible  downfall  of Thailand  apart  from way too many  motor vehicles  and pollution

Is the  way  Thai  drink  they  seem to  think drinking  booze  is  a way  of life

And the young  unemplyed  well  I  have seen  first  hand the  drug problem  there

Really  I  do not know the answer  the culture  seems  drinking booze  is normal

Drugs  are also  a way of life for many young in Thailand

The  huge  Crime lords  organisations  in the  provences  who  pay  for protection will  never stop  the  sale of drugs  at any level

Your  crime rate  is  up  your unemployment  is through the roof  your  Baht  is too high .....What  can be done

God  or  Budha only knows

Good luck  Thailand

are 99 % of the thaivisa readers alcohol addicted ? (it is a question , because nothing gets such a big response like this- and all responses  _so far I have red- are extremely upset about the announcement of beverages to be banned via electronic channels.)
by the way, this would also explain many other responses you can read from thaivisa readers.)
Just as a reminder: alcohol does have   THE most  evil impact from all " drugs" by number. Most (?) violent felonies are done under the influence of alcohol, its the number one reason in road accidents, immense harm done to the body,  the damage done to the whole society (incl. economical) is huge.
I am not sure, that the prohibition of online sale is a good thing, but it seems, all these readers are not interested in arguments and pro and contra.  It seems just to be a hysterical outcry like people  who are addicted do, when they fear, their inflow of the  drug will be limited.

Sorry , just my impression ...

And your impression could not be any further from the truth.  People complain when there is an inequity created and folks who relied on a certain way to order specialty beer, wines or spirits is curtailed and then there is no way for them to obtain said items.  I am not sure why you believe that anyone who complains is an alcoholic or has a problem, in fact a glass of red wine is shown to do wonders for your heart.  By creating the inequity, as many do not live close to a location which sells such beverages, the government has ensured that only the Thai Swill that is made can be obtained.  Maybe time to think outside of the box a little and step down off of your pulpit.

I've posted a couple of times previously on this thread, very critical of this measure.

Far from being alcohol addicted, I haven't bought any booze online for over 7 years, haven't bought booze from any source for 3+ years and have only shared a single 300ml bottle of Beer Lao Dark (with MrsL) in the past year.

This decree effectively limits the choice of beer etc., for those who wish to buy, to the truly awful mainstream offerings of the big Thai breweries. It imposes a draconian measure, ostensibly to 'protect' vulnerable potential purchasers, to prevent sales to all (in the hope that they'd turn to the likes of Leo, Singha etc. (YUK!!) ???) when there are effective ways of achieving that aim already in existence.

I, and I suppose many others who you assume are 'alcohol-addicted', am against the 'taking a sledgehammer to crack a walnut' approach of this government on so many matters.

This thread is a good opportunity to voice that opinion.

Who on earth buys alcohol on line? Is it colder when it arrives??   More "Thaipidity".  Obviously, this is aimed at any who would dare to invade the territory of the huge beer conglomerates. Cambodia will probably follow suit. They now have an LM law after seeing how beautifully, the Thai law worked in controlling speech.

Wine is purchased on-line in large quantities to wine refrigerator's/cellar's, and has nothing to do with your impression of it being colder.  Purchasing the Hi-End spirits is also done by folks who do not enjoy Hong Thong, Pipers, and Lao Kow, not to mention the swill they try to sell as wine from within this country.  Buying one or two bottles at a time is not practical for many, as ability to transport the quantity needed sometimes is not easily undertaken.

What? Where in the world did you get that information?

I pay for 200/200 but in reality it's no more than 20% of that.

Illegal

My quote was tongue in cheek, but yes illegal. However, there a few places in BKK which advertise the equipment for sale, and even on Lazada.

Exactly! That was what I thought. I have a 1 Gbit and it shows 930 Mbit on speedtest. However, that is not true either. As for example when I download something. Let´s say from Microsoft or a Google website. They are quick. Then I usually get a speed of 12Gb down. That would mean a speed of 96 Mbit in reality as 1 Mb is 8 Mbit.

If I were an underage drinker, I'd buy all my booze online. In Australia, they just leave it on your doorstep if you're not around.

ok, switch on the brain - how many of alcohol-addicted felons in Thailand usually order their booze online using credit cards ?

what this new regulation does is prevent people from ordering rare wines, rare spirits or rare brews online. what is infuriating about it, is that this is again an example of crude, excessive, knee-jerk and daft heavy handed regulation in Thailand.

the Thai government seemingly can't make balanced laws, it's always everything or nothing.

Stupid. Or the alcohol boys not lining your pockets enough, therefore you idiots are making life hard for them.

No problem. You can order food at elevated prices you and get the wine or beer with it for free. It is allowed to send out alcohol as a gift or not?

Just another step in ruining the Thai economy completely. These idiots won't rest until they've destroyed the country completely...

Yeah I get that, but 50 years ago we didn't have to carry ID around. I'm tall, so I used to get away with it too. Thais do, so easy to detect underage drinkers on the door of a venue, but not online.

Sounds like a lot of Expats in Thailand are miserable.

Really tell me how so?

Here we go again, the leaders of this country are spending a lot of time and effort to remain

a backward country. It becomes obvious the "alcohol mafia" is in charge.

There is no other reason why gowned up, responsible people could not buy alcohol online,

it just does not make an sense.

YOU obviously didn't bother to read the complete thread.     NO problem Sir.

A tiny thing line online alcohol sales  causes such turmoil with so many who probably never order alcohol on line anyhow.

You failed to grasp that?

My instinct is that the Thai Government (it doesn't really matter which government) is always in cahoots with the big Sino-Thai conglomerates. The latter have seen Wishbeer and others open up a gap in the market. The lesson for most foreign operatives in Thailand is to fly under the radar and not attract too much attention from the likes of Central or Charoen.Even joint ventures can be risky if the local partner begins to feel the foreigner is making too much money (though I don't think Wishbeer were doing that well).Once the outsider is neutralised, the government will quietly backtrack on restrictive regulations so their Sino-Thai friends can clean up completely.

Has anyone used 88Dutyfree on Line? they have some good deals but wary about ordering as know nothing about them, they have a website as well. Quite large savings on single malts etc.
