Thai driving licences

Featured Replies

I live in Surin with my Thai girlfriend. She was told by the licencing "authority" here that she would need to take her driving test in her hometown (Phuyow). She therefore had to travel 18 hours, each way, to take a test in unfamiliar surroundings with an unfamiliar vehicle. She passed even so. However, she was told that she will need to travel back to Phuyow each year to renew the licence. Surely there must be an easier way.

You could buy her a home in Surin?

You could move to Phuyow?

You could wait?

Things seem to be slowly changing away from the 'home register' being the key paperwork to new ID cards which may change these old rules.  But it may still be a few years (at least until everyone is on-line) before these years trips become a thing of the past.

Perhaps there is another way as am no expert on this subject and things are changing.

The first two options are not really feasible (I own a house in Surin - on my ex wife's land). The last option (to wait) is too late. I'll investigate the possibility of a postal renewal when the time draws near.
Can't she just register at the new address (your house) - she doesn't have to own it to live there?
